Dyneema® Denim Could Change The Future Of Motorcycle Gear

Stronger than steel, lighter than water, and more comfortable than leather

We're quickly approaching a world where you might see MotoGP riders hurtling down racetracks wearing denim race suits. Seriously. And it's all thanks to a little product called Dyneema®.

Dyneema® fiber isn't exactly new, however, just new to the motorcycle space. It's made from Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE), and has been used for years for everything from sailing ships to resisting bullets to repairing humans. Dyneema® is 15 times stronger than steel, 40% stronger than aramids, resistant to moisture, UV, and chemicals, and is light enough to float on water. You can read more about the story of Dyneema® here.

And now, it's being woven into denim for use with motorcycle safety apparel. These new fabrics contain 62% Dyneema®, and can slide for 3.75 seconds before wearing through (compared to 0.4 seconds for normal denim). Saint has a great infographic, showing just how differently their denim performs compared to normal denim.

Dyneema® say they're close to another advancement that will increase abrasion resistance another 20%-30%, which will put Dyneema® into CE levels of protection. This far, Saint and El Solitario are leading the way with weaving Dyneema® into their motorcycle apparel, and their offerings definitely skew to a certain aesthetic and style, but that doesn't mean we won't see Dyneema® accepted across more brands or used in conjunction with armor in the near future.

I've been wearing the Saint Unbreakable Denim Jacket for the past few weeks, and I have to admit I'm pretty impressed. Anyone who's into denim knows that there's often a pretty extensive break in process and that quality denim is normally pretty stiff when you first get it. Saint's jacket could not be a further departure, and the incredibly lightweight jacket fit well and was soft out of the box. Obviously, button enclosures and its lack of armor will keep it from being as protective in a crash as a proper leather sport riding jacket, but what they've achieved with the denim itself is nothing short of incredible.

For those of you who wear no or little gear, the Dyneema® infused products from Saint or El Solitario are a huge step for staying safer on the roads. For the rest of us, it's a sign of things to come.
