If you’re looking for an easy-entry, slip-it-on, zip-it-up-type sport-riding boot, Sidi offers several such models. Cinching up the Vortice, the Italian cobbler’s top-of-the-line racing model, however, is neither easy nor quick but worth the effort.
After donning the leather-like Lorica boot and pulling closed the full-length zipper, the wearer must endure a 10-step course of action to a) correctly tuck in overlaying protective plastic flaps; and b) lock down the ratcheting Tecno II buckle system, which is said to help protect against toe injuries caused by the foot sliding forward within the boot in a crash. Likewise, the twist-to-tighten, back-of-boot Tecno VR mechanism allows fine adjustments in the calf area. At first, this process seems unusually time-consuming, but the result is an exceptionally secure fit.
We put the Vortice to the test on both the street and track during a recent multi-day comparison of the latest European and Japanese repli-racers. Regardless of brand or model of motorcycle, the hinged external ankle bracing never snagged on a footguard. Likewise, the molded rubber sole with its replaceable insert provided excellent feel and non-slip footing on a mix of pegs. Closable air vents in the toe and outer-foot areas performed well in conditions that varied from dry and hot to cold and wet. Further, the non-sparking alloy insert built into the toe slider proved highly resistant to wear.
Great fit and protection you can count on—just what you need for the peace of mind to ride fast.
