Since KTM purchased 60 percent stake in GasGas in late September 2019, the first bikes that have been announced from the Girona, Spain-based manufacturer under its new ownership are the 2020 TXT Racing trials bikes. The four models in the lineup include the TXT Racing 125, TXT Racing 250, TXT Racing 280, and TXT Racing 300.

The GasGas trials bike engines are designed to be compact, light, and, above all else, powerful. The single-cylinder, liquid-cooled two-stroke engine features thermodynamic ports, while the cast cylinder head has internal domes that have been refined in an effort to deliver improved combustion and the best engine performance possible. Optimized cooling ducts are intended to ensure a constant engine operating temperature.
The crankcase is manufactured using a gravity casting production process that is claimed to help with weight reduction, while retaining strength and durability. The compact design is said to allow for an ideal center of gravity as well. To make the engine more compact, the clutch cover includes the clutch master cylinder.
The crankshaft is balanced and manufactured in an effort to ensure maximum inertia with minimum weight. According to GasGas, the crankshaft not only helps produce the TXT Racing model’s torque and revs, it also contributes to better overall handling. A closed main bearing made by SKF is said to increase durability and reduce the amount of lubrication needed.
The connecting rod uses two needle bearings to ease lubrication and increase durability. To be more compact and reduce complexity, the crankshaft also drives the water pump impeller. The cylinder features specifically designed intake and exhaust ports that are said to provide excellent torque and overall power delivery, while a low-weight cylinder bracket is designed to reduce engine vibration. According to GasGas, the forged piston delivers high peak power.
The GasGas 1/3 compact clutch consists of three Kevlar friction plates and two steel plates with a Belleville spring system. It utilizes an adjustable clutch preload system designed to improve power and torque delivery, and Braktec hydraulics that are said to deliver maximum torque with a light and easy feel, near maintenance-free operation, and perfect modulation in every condition. Clutch play is constantly compensated so that the pressure point and function of the clutch remain identical in hot or cold conditions, as well as over time.
Claimed to be the lightest gearbox on the market, the patented 4/6 system allows shifting through six gears with four gears per transmission shaft, allowing the TXT Racing models to have more compact crankcases. The shift forks are made out of aluminum to reduce weight and the shift star is located underneath the shift drum, which is another patented system. The front sprocket can be installed in any direction.
The GasGas TXT Racing trials bike engines are fed by a Keihin PWK 28mm carburetor and utilize an aluminum inverted U-flow radiator that features 20.4cm2 cooling area and a 115mm electrical waterproof-protected IP68 fan to ensure optimal operating temperature. The ignition and electrical system do not require a battery, thereby reducing weight. Both the engine control unit (ECU) and ignition coil are located underneath the frame, close to the top of the engine. The exhaust system is made up of a stainless header pipe and aluminum silencer. The removable plastic muffler end cap is designed to enable easy packing replacement.
The GasGas TXT Racing models use a Tech 39mm fork that features 7.1 inches of travel. The left-side fork leg has a progressive adjustable spring as well as an “End Stroke” adjustment function to avoid bottoming. The right-side fork leg features a rebound adjustment clicker at the top. The 445-gram steel front axle is designed to ensure maximum front wheel confidence and feeling with the ground. At the rear is an Öhlins two-way hydraulic shock that offers 6.9 inches of travel and is adjustable for spring preload and rebound damping.
The GasGas TXT Racing model’s chrome-moly (25CrMo4) steel tubular frame is crafted using 1.5mm tubes, laser cutting, and robot welding, and is developed using specifically calculated parameters of longitudinal and torsional flex. The frame is powdercoated red and has a claimed weight of 13.2 pounds.
The swingarm is a hollow one-piece cast aluminum unit that GasGas claims offers optimal stiffness and reliability at the lightest possible weight, and performs with flex behavior that works in harmony with the frame. A redesign of the swingarm and linkage are designed to increase overall stability and traction of the new 2020 TXT Racing model range. CNC-machined, black-anodized aluminum triple clamps with a 35mm offset are designed to provide a secure fork mount for precise handling and hold a tapered aluminum alloy GasGas handlebar. The grips are by Moting.
The design of the bodywork focuses on reducing weight, increasing comfort, and delivering the best trials-specific ergonomics available, all while showcasing distinctive looks and graphics. The ergonomics are intended to deliver great mobility and comfort, enabling riders to perform at the highest level for extended periods of time. For all this, GasGas uses a mixture of polypropylene in proportions of 30 percent to 70 percent to obtain plastics with good flexibility, and do not become marked when bent 90 degrees or break easily from impacts or bending. The 0.63-gallon fuel tank is integrated with both the frame and bodywork.
The airbox is designed to ensure maximum airflow and filter protection. The Twin Air filter is accessed by unscrewing one bolt. The airbox has a patented design, which allows the component to serve as both a structural and a filtration element without the use of any metal subassemblies. The map switch is designed for easy operation and allows the rider to toggle between two ignition curves (sun or rain) based on dry or wet conditions, or to suit rider preference.
The wheels are made up of black aluminum rims by Morad, which are coupled to CNC-machined hubs using lightweight spokes and zinc-plated steel nipples. The front rim is 1.6 x 21 inches and is mounted with a tube, while the rear rim is 2.15 x 18 inches and is tubeless. Both wheels have 32 spokes and Michelin X11 tires.
A Braktec braking system is used front and rear, which is specifically tailored for trials riding and is said to deliver a sensitive and modulated feel. The four-piston front caliper with a 185mm wave floating brake disc by NG and the two-piston rear caliper with its 150mm NG wave disc are designed to keep weight to a minimum. The rear brake system has patented magnetic neodymium brake pads to keep them open while changing the wheel.
Other standard features on the 2020 GasGas TXT Racing models include a front mud guard with an integrated fork brace, plastic disc protectors, and a kickstand with an integrated protrusion for easy operation by the rider’s foot. One of GasGas’ main objectives with its TXT Racing models is to make them lightweight. For 2020, the TXT Racing 300, TXT Racing 280, and TXT Racing 250 models have a claimed dry weight of 149 pounds, while the TXT Racing 125 comes in at a claimed 148 pounds. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for each model is as follows:
2020 GasGas TXT Racing 300: $7,899
2020 GasGas TXT Racing 280: $7,799
2020 GasGas TXT Racing 250: $7,599
2020 GasGas TXT Racing 125: $7,099
