After unveiling the redesigned 2021 MT-09, Yamaha is adding an up-spec SP model to the lineup. SP: two little letters rife with meaning to motorcycle enthusiasts. In the case of the MT-09 SP, they mean higher-spec suspension components, cruise control, and a dedicated styling package. The boost in specification has an attendant price hike, bringing the MSRP to $10,999, up from $9,399 for the base model.
For the SP, Yamaha replaces the base model’s KYB shock with a more blingy, fully adjustable Öhlins unit. Up front, the SP includes a higher-spec, fully adjustable inverted fork, featuring low- and high-speed compression damping circuits. It’s finished in DLC (diamond-like coating) for decreased stiction.
The MT-09 SP features a cruise control system as standard. It’s a welcome feature, though we’re firmly in the camp that believes OEMs should start including cruise control on basically every motorcycle with ride-by-wire throttle. Is there a reason OEMs still consider cruise control a premium feature?
In terms of styling, the SP model features a double-stitched seat, a brushed and clear-coated swingarm, and a YZF-R1M-inspired paint scheme.
While a $1,600 premium over the base model is not insignificant, and maybe we’d like to see additional premium features—lighter wheels, a smattering of carbon fiber—to further distinguish the SP from the base model, adding a higher-spec trim is a great way to counteract the slash of red ink from the bean counter who probably considered up-spec suspension to be low-hanging fruit. We’re glad to see Yamaha expand its premium offerings to compete more directly with European options.
It’s worth pointing out that at $10,999, the MT-09 SP is still considerably more affordable than the European competition—the 2020 Triumph Speed Triple RS is $12,850 and the KTM 890 Duke R is $12,439.
In case you missed it, the 2021 Yamaha MT-09 is basically all-new. With revamped engine, chassis, electronics package, and styling Yamaha brings the MT-09 bang up to date. Look for the base model and SP model to be available in US dealers beginning in January.
