(Disclaimer: Do not attempt to ride your motorcycle with your dog if there is any doubt of your ability to ride safely and securely.)
Nowadays pet dogs join us on nearly every adventure. But motorcycle adventures?
Yes, even those.
Take my colleague, Morgan Gales, who often brings his puppy Rollie to the office by kangarooing his terrier inside his jacket. His tips for riding with your dog are written out in detail on Motorcycle Cruiser. Another example (out of the doubtless thousands) would be the Glasgow bichon frise Motorbike Milly, who swept across the internet a couple years ago with her moto adventures and gear. According to DailyMail.com’s coverage, Milly was crowned “Britain’s Best Biking Buddy.”
Of course, there are times when dogs and motorcycles just don’t get along, but if the correct training is implemented and both dog and rider are safe and comfortable on two wheels, then it is possible, especially with specific motorcycles and gear.
Dogs riding in a sidecar is more common than you might think. The sidecar of the Ural motorcycle, for example, provides a stable seat for your K-9, big or small. Granted it is a $15K-plus investment, but you can really rack up the adventure miles (and smiles) with your dog. One of our office pooches, Gracie, is often transported by her owner Cycle World Senior Editor Justin Dawes to the office via sidecar. Dawes says that every time the ignition of the Ural is turned on her ears perk up and she races for her harness. She has even experienced “flying” in the sidecar as well. Follow Gracie on Instagram to see all of her Ural adventures. Be sure to also tune in to Motorcyclist’s YouTube channel for an upcoming video series, Dog, Gone! which will chronicle the adventures of our office’s sidecar dog.
Would you like your petite pet to join you for the ride? If so, Nelson-Rigg has one of its latest products to assist. The Rover Pet Carrier can accommodate up to 20 pounds and mounts onto trunk racks, sissy bar, or seat. After the ride is complete, the carrier can act as a tote for your pooch as well. Fresh air breezing through is key for our furry friends, so smaller mesh side vents are permanently open to allow for this need. The owner can also unzip the two larger side panels to further maximize airflow. Further, protection from the sun can also be had as the UltraMax fabric provides UV protection. In order to maximize the safety of your pet, harness them and attach the included adjustable leash to keep them secure. For only $229.95, this is a much more affordable investment than keeping your pet at a pet hotel or with a sitter everytime you go out for a riding trip.

We’ve already covered carrying your pet close to your chest like riding duo Morgan and Rollie, so here is another option. Place your doggo in a K9 Sport Sack backpack. This pack allows your dog to face forward and stay secure while on your back. Features like ventilated side panels, a wide base, cinch straps, and an adjustable collar enclosure allows for your dog to perch in comfort while enjoying the ride. There is room for some self-expression with patterns ranging from tropical or plaid to simple, subdued solid colorways. Capacities of 30, 40, and even up to 80 pounds are available to choose from, however, it is important to keep in mind the weight shift while you ride and determine what best suits your riding skills.

Finally, provide eye protection for your dog. At speed, a bug or debris in the eyes would not be pleasant. That problem can be avoided with gear like Rex Specs or Doggles. As mentioned, Gracie sports Rex Specs when she rides. Rex Specs, for example, range in sizes from XS to XL (with a small-wide size for the Frenchies and other smaller, wider-faced breeds). The large, spherical lens provides a wide peripheral view and the straps are situated to allow for full jaw motion. The foam edge not only provides comfort, but keeps out dust and debris. Looking for a review of the Rex Specs? Cycle World has one here.
Riding two-up has a whole new meaning now. Just remember to always ride safely and take your skills and your familiarity with your dog into account.
No matter what difficulties we are facing in the world today a feel-good pic or video of an adorable dog will brighten your day. We found some fun photos of dogs and two wheels across Instagram:
