Moto Guzzi had a few tricks up its sleeve at EICMA, the highlight being the Concept V85. Powered by a revised version of the 850cc "small-block" V-twin used in the V9 series, this uniquely styled adventure-tourer is said to deliver around 80 hp. If that is true, this will be the best-performing street-legal version of the company's two-valve, air-cooled V-twin.
This spirited engine is housed in a bright-red frame that I'm told is inspired by traditional enduro bikes. Expected to reach production in the second half of next year, the V85 doesn't replace the discontinued Stelvio but rather forges its own place in the model line and may also serve as the basis for a roadster or even a naked sportbike.
Three special editions of the V7 III were also unveiled: Carbon, featuring a number of carbon-fiber components and red valve covers; Rough, boasting an urban-scrambler look and semi-knobby tires; and the clean, sober Milano. These packages are intended to move more V7s, Guzzi's best-selling model. The V9, Bobber, and Roamer also received graphics updates.
Piaggio planned no fireworks for Aprilia this year at EICMA. The Noale-based outfit is idling along after introducing Euro 4 emissions editions of the RSV4 and Tuono V4 1100, which were followed by 896cc versions of the Shiver and Dorsoduro. The only new models that debuted at the show were a couple of 50cc two-strokes intended for local markets—not a good sign.
More exciting is the factory works kit developed by the racing department for the RSV4 RF. Intended for private teams competing in World Superbike, the kit includes high-compression pistons, specially machined heads, a new ECU, and a titanium exhaust system, the combination increasing output to 215 hp. Carbon-fiber body parts reduce weight by 22 pounds.
Piaggio remains cautious when investing in the promotion of its motorcycle brands, Aprilia in particular. The result is somewhat of a contradiction because the quality of the bikes deserves a sharper, more aggressive marketing plan that would surely generate more sales.
