The original KTM SM-T ushered in the idea of a supermoto-like machine that had touring chops. The 890 SMT carries on that tradition, designed as a hooligan crossed up with a sport-tourer. This middleweight parallel-twin-powered machine is lighter and more nimble than open-class machines like KTM’s own 1290 Super Duke GT, but a big step up from single-cylinder supermotos like the 690 SMC R.
Power comes from the 889cc version of the LC8c twin that makes a claimed 103 hp and 74 lb.-ft. of peak torque. Power is sent to the six-speed transmission via a PASC slipper clutch. Ride-by-wire throttle control enables a whole suite of rider aids including multiple ride modes, MTC (motorcycle traction control), cornering ABS, and Supermoto ABS. Cruise control and a quickshifter are optional.
The chassis is built to be nimble and stable. Adjustable front and rear suspension uses a WP 43mm Apex fork and monoshock. A pair of radial-mount four-piston calipers with 320mm discs are used up front, while a twin-piston caliper and 260mm disc handles braking. Bosch 9.1 cornering ABS is standard.
