YEARS SOLD: 2000–2007

BLUE BOOK RETAIL VALUE: $2005 ('00) to $3675 ('07)
BASIC SPECS: Powered by the RFS (Racing Four Stroke) SOHC, four-valve-per-cylinder, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder competition-derived engine (displacing an actual 510cc), the 520 was renamed 525 in '03 due to evolutionary updates in overall specification. Both generations feature Nikasil-plated cylinders, a 39mm FCR Keihin carburetor, and have screw/nut valve adjusters all regarded as durable and easy to service with valve adjustments about every 3K. Utilizing the nimble 450 EXC chassis, its double-cradle chrome-moly steel frame features top-shelf fully adjustable WP suspension, Brembo brakes, and carries a 2.5-gallon fuel load.
WHY IT'S DESIRABLE: These models helped KTM establish its dominance in off-road racing around the globe. While RFS engines make a ton of mechanical noise, they do hold up extremely well. Quality components, including handlebars, brakes, hydraulic clutch, durable wheels, etc., made the initial investment stand apart when new and equate to a good value used. Another positive is the simplicity of the PDS rear suspension, as it has very few parts to wear, corrode, or generally deteriorate. Today's bikes have gained performance and lost weight but have become much more complex in the process. Much can be praised about simple motorcycles when you are out exploring far from civilization.
