Overview

In today’s market, there is no shortage of powerful high-performance dual sport and ADV motorcycles. Some of these impressive giants can do things that, only a few years ago, were only possible on bikes half their weight. While the adventure segment is continuing to grow by leaps and bounds, there is still one icon that stands above all else when it comes to circumnavigating the globe on two wheels. Dubbed the Swiss army knife of motorcycles and named the winner of Cycle World’s famous 2013 Armageddon Tour Adventure Bike Comparison Test, the Kawasaki KLR650.

The KLR650 is a long-standing model in the Kawasaki lineup. It was first introduced in 1987 and undergone only a handful of major revisions in its decades-long span. But what it has seen is a cultlike following, enduring reliability, and hundreds of thousands (millions?) of miles traveled around the world. It’s easy to ride, easy to maintain, possible to repair on just about any continent, and as cooperative as it is inexpensive. The KLR650 has its share of fans, most of whom were likely thrown into complete panic when the venerated dual sport disappeared from Kawasaki’s lineup in 2018. But it returned in 2022 with some upgrades including fuel injection, and continues to be available in model year 2025, now in three variants.

The KLR650 remains powered by a docile, large-bore, single-cylinder engine. It won’t rip any holeshots, but it will lope along at highway speeds for very long stretches with a massive 6.1-gallon fuel tank. Modest onboard electronics and a “chunky” profile mean it’s not the most svelte or advanced on the road, but simplicity continues to be the strength of the KLR650. Starting at only $6899 (non-ABS model), the price is still right for this stalwart platform.

The KLR650 is now also available in a KLR650 S version which features a seat height more than 2 inches lower than stock. The inseam-challenged will appreciate the most approachable KLR yet, with a seat height of only 32.1 inches. The third variant available for 2025 is the KLR650 Adventure ABS, which comes equipped with side cases, fog lamps, additional outlets for onboard electronics, and more bits and bobs designed to go the distance.

Inseam-challenged, rejoice! The 2025 Kawasaki KLR650 S offers a seat height more than 2 inches lower than standard.Kawasaki
