BASIC SPECS: Powered by a fuel-efficient 234cc, air-cooled, SOHC, four-stroke parallel twin, the CMX250 (better known as the Rebel 250) features CDI ignition, a five-speed gearbox, and chain final drive. Its steel-tube double-cradle frame rides on a 33mm fork with 4.6-inch travel and twin shocks offering five-position spring preload adjustment and 2.7-inch travel. Top speed is in the neighborhood of 70 mph, and its single disc front (with two-piston pin-slide caliper) and a drum rear brake do an admirable job. Styling is decidedly cruiser with a 30-degree rake, pullback handle bar, teardrop tank, stepped saddle, wire-spoke chrome wheels, and bobbed rear fender.
WHY IT'S DESIRABLE: No other motorcycle has introduced more road riders to the sport than the novice-friendly Rebel 250. Its tame power delivery, long 57.1-inch wheelbase, low 26.6-inch seat height, and 331-pound claimed curb weight add up to an agile yet stable platform that instills rider confidence. As the legendary Rebel 250 has been discontinued with the introduction of Honda's all-new 2017 Rebel 300, look for discounts on remaining new stock and plenty of availability on the used market. Low operating cost, reliability, and ease of maintenance continue to make the Rebel 250 an attractive first purchase.
