Two additional updated models have just been announced by BMW for 2025, including the F 900 R roadster and the F 900 XR crossover. Both of these middleweight models are part of BMW’s parallel-twin family that utilizes the 895cc engine that also powers the F 900 GS and F 900 GS Adventure.
Although limited to changes to meet the aforementioned Euro 5+ regulations, here is a recap on the parallel twin that powers both models. The liquid-cooled engine has 86 x 77mm bore and stroke dimensions resulting in a 895cc displacement. It has double overhead cams and four valves per cylinder and features a 270/450 degree firing order, which not only gives it a unique sound but helps generate good traction. Claimed output remains 105 hp at 8,500 rpm with 68.6 lb.-ft. of peak torque at 6,500 rpm. A pair of balance shafts help keep the engine smooth. An optional Akrapovič sports exhaust is available as an accessory.
Both variations feature six-speed transmissions and chain final drive, with power managed by an anti-hopping, slipper-style clutch. New for 2025 is the addition of BMW’s MSR Engine Drag Torque Control as standard. This electronic control helps the slipper clutch to reduce engine-braking while downshifting at higher rpm.
Electronic features that are shared between the models include two standard ride modes (Road and Rain), while the optional Ride Modes Pro adds an additional Dynamic mode that is available as part of the Premium Package. Dynamic Traction Control and BMW Motorrad ABS Pro are included as standard, as is Dynamic Brake Control, which improves braking by suppressing any throttle input under deceleration.
Both the F 900 R and F 900 XR get an upgraded fork, which is a 43mm inverted unit with provisions for spring preload, compression, and rebound damping adjustability. The 900 R has 5.3 inches of front travel, while the 900 XR has 6.7 inches. At the rear of each model is a monoshock with preload and rebound adjustability. Dynamic ESA suspension can be added as a stand-alone option for $445, offering semi-active electronic-damping adjustment and electronic-preload adjustment.
The other change that will make an instant improvement in handling are new cast aluminum wheels which are borrowed from the S 1000 R. The wheels now weigh 3.9 pounds less each than the units they replace, reducing unsprung and rotational mass for improved handling, braking, and acceleration. Wheels measure 3.5 x 17 inches front and 5.5 x 17 rear, and are mounted with 120/70-17 and 180/55-17 tires, respectively.
A few other notable updates were made to both models like new batteries that weigh 1.7 pounds less. While the updated rear end has function-integrated turn indicators that also serve double duty as the brake lights. Upfront (and now standard) is a new headlight which features the Headlight Pro functionality. The adaptive headlight illuminates additional LEDs to light the inside of corners at night while leaned over. Other included features are heated grips, and a USB-C charging port.
Ergonomic updates to the F 900 R include changes to the handlebar and footrests resulting in a sportier riding position. The handlebar is now moved farther forward, and the footpegs back for a more front-leaning riding posture. An optional Sport Seat raises the height from 32.9 to 33.9 inches, while on the flipside, there is an optional 31.1-inch low seat, or with the optional low suspension/low seat combo it can be dropped down to 29.9 inches.
On the F 900 XR changes have been made to optimize rider comfort with a reshaped front windscreen and fairing and standard hand guards. The optional 1.2-inch higher windscreen can be added by opting for the Premium Package.
