The Ultimate Riding Machine.

2018 BMW K 1600 GTBMW

Major goals for touring bikes are power, weather protection, load capacity, steady high-speed handling, and comfort. As the midpoint of BMW’s K1600 line, the K1600GT shares its 160-hp, 1,649cc DOHC 24-valve inline-six with three other models. The radical laydown cylinder configuration pushes the wheelbase to 63.7 inches but lowers the center of mass for lighter, friendlier handling of this big 736-pound rig. Despite the bodywork covering most mechanical bits, stylists left the six-cylinder engine exposed (well, okay, at least the outboard cylinders and heads are exposed), and anointed the cylinders with a “6” just so everyone knows.

Moving along the priorities list, comprehensive upper and lower fairings and an electrically adjustable windshield provide excellent protection from the elements, while the 454-pound load capacity is (hopefully) adequate for you, a passenger, and luggage. The long wheelbase, conservative steering geometry, and Duolever fork and single-shock Paralever rear suspension produce steady, neutral handling, while standard dual heated seats, pleasant ergonomics, and the aforementioned good wind protection target all-day comfort. To streamline the purchase process, three option packages include Style Sport, Safety Plus, and Select.

Likes: Standard xenon headlight, self-adjusting suspension, center- and sidestands

Dislikes: Stated maximum load capacity may be marginal for big riders and their gear

Verdict: First-rate touring comfort with a sporting flair
