PHOTO ESSAY: Sturgis by iPhone

Is it possible to have too much of a good thing? No. I mean yes. Wait, I don’t know.

The event began in 1938 as the Black Hills Classic, but missed two years due a rather large war, making this the 75th Sturgis Rally. What follows is a short photo essay of things seen at the event. Even though every image here was taken on public streets, you might want to consider that this might be NSFW . Or for kids. Beyond short captions for context, we’ll let the images speak for themselves. Biker is as biker does.

Sturgis1

1) Were there a million motorcycles at the 75th Sturgis? Who knows? But there were more than ever before.

Sturgis2

2) The race that time forgot. Apparently the promoter forgot to promote the AMA Supermoto race at Sturgis, which was a great event enjoyed by well over 50 people. Show is Dustin Hoffman, winner of Saturday’s Open Pro race. And yes, everyone there could get this close to the action.

Sturgis3

3) An iconic image of what America is all about: freedom, black leather, and reverence.

Sturgis4

4) Parked on Main Street in Sturgis, possibly the coolest home-built three-wheeler ever.

Sturgis5

5) First of all, we’ve no idea how a Biker Bible differs from other versions, but we’re guessing that the Romans weren’t the ones riding. Secondly, this image, like others here, includes things that hadn’t been noticed until days after the picture was taken.

Sturgis6

6) And there they are, larger than life, carved right out a tree in their own front yard. May they rest in peace.

Sturgis7

7) A street display showing off a few nice things to buy your girl to wear at Sturgis. In public, naked breasts are okay, but nipples are extremely forbidden (if they’re on a woman). So even the painted women walking around had secondary patches beneath the paint. Feathers are optional.

Sturgis8

8) Custer State Park is crazy pretty. It’s also full of wild animals, who are crazy pretty. A buffalo weights 2000 lb. and can run 40 mph. Enough said.

Sturgis9

9) I never would have guessed that I’d run into my sister there. And don’t forget to bring home some beer.

Sturgis10

10) Safety gear? A disguise due to metric embarrassment? Is this me?

Sturgis11

11) The most patriot experience of my life. The ice cream at Mount Rushmore is delicious. They even have a Thomas Jefferson vanilla. It’s basically a rich custard, and highly recommended.

Sturgis12

12) In the city of Custer, the famous Saint John’s Church bar-and-shield logo.

Sturgis13

13) There’s a statue of Daisy Duke’s father in the city of Custer. Or something like that. Anyway, he’s a quiet man.

Sturgis14

14) On the Wildlife Loop Road in Custer State Park, where the wildlife get to pet the wildlife. Word is, if there’s a buffalo in front of you that you can see both eyes of, leave immediately. And also, you’re not supposed to do what these people are doing.

Sturgis15

15) Traffic on Lazelle Street in Sturgis any time of day during the rally. And it was above 90 degrees nearly every day of the event.

Sturgis16

16) Back on main Street in Sturgis.

Sturgis17

17) It was Hoobastank at Easyriders! Did you know that three of those guys are avid bikers. Rock on!

Sturgis18

18) Just an innocent image of the Sturgis Motorcycle Museum and Hall of Fame, at Junction and Main.

Sturgis19

19) A custom, home-built trike hot rod parked on Main. So yes, three-wheelers were everywhere and treated by law as motorcycles, even down to driving and parking on Main Street in Sturgis.

Sturgis20

20) An enthusiast of Dia de los Muertos, and her cell phone. I hope that guy doesn’t trip on the curb.

Sturgis21

21) Some 90 miles from the city of Sturgis, in the city of Custer. Yes, this event is a region, a state or two, an empire, not any one town.

Sturgis22

22) The idyllic hills of Custer State Park, a great place in which to get lost, where even during this insanely attended event, traffic was light.

Sturgis23

23) The FLH ocean at Black Hills Harley Davidson. This is a must-stop for many Sturgis regulars, where outside of Sturgis the industry’s serious aftermarket companies do installations.

Sturgis24

24) In case you were wondering if we did this journey by car. Nope, the ride was on a motorcycle stolen from Indian.

Sturgis25

25) So, a penis and a vagina walk into a bar…but seriously, always use protection.

Sturgis26

26) At Sturgis, there was a surprise visitor. He had time to chat, so I was able to straighten out the mystery behind the missing axle to Fred’s log car in the Flintstone set I got of Bedrock City a number of decades ago. Such a weight finally taken off my chest.

Sturgis27

27) For a fee, you could climb this thing in the middle of Main Street and take a picture of the jam-packed avenue below.
