Red Bull Media Press Release:
Everything was set up for the hardest single-day endurance race in the world - A devilishly difficult course, a top-class starting field and torrential rain - all of which conspired to make Red Bull Hare Scramble live up to its fiendish reputation again in 2013.
Graham Jarvis got to grips best with the extreme conditions and took his first victory in the competition. All the talk ahead of the race was about a battle between serial winner Taddy Blazusiak (POL) and British starlet Jonny Walker. As so often has been the case on the Erzberg mountain, things refused to go according to plan.
Blazusiak had to skip the event due to injury, and Walker - last year's winner - had to contend with water flooding into his engine straight after the start. There was no shortage of excitement at the Red Bull Hare Scramble, however. The top-class starting field got the hearts of motor sport fans racing, while torrential rain turned the already devilish course into a nightmare. Some 97 percent of the field met their match for today in the legendary iron mountain, of the 500 riders, only 14 made it to the finishing line within the designated four-hour time limit.
The Ultimate Hard Enduro Race - Red Bull Hare Scramble 2013:
Organizer Karl Katoch showed no mercy on Sunday, saying:
"You can see, so we'll race!"
The drivers started by dashing through knee-deep water with howling engines, with several getting caught out by the conditions in the first ascent. That was just the start though as the mud-slinging continued through slippery forest paths, giant fields of boulders and near vertical downhill paths. There were fuming engines, mud-soaked motorcycles and resigned faces on drivers galore wherever you looked.
Jarvis quickly raced to the front, and after taking the lead for a while, Andreas Lettenbichler could not keep up with the tempo. For Jarvis, who had previously been disqualified four times in the Red Bull Hare Scramble for taking the wrong route, a long desired dream has been fulfilled. He said: "I am just speechless and delighted! The course was harder than ever, at times I couldn't see a thing as there was so much water on the track. Fortune was on my side today though!" Jarvis finished 19 minutes ahead of Lettenbichler.
