Honda VTX1800 - Best Used Bikes

Years sold: 8 (2001-08)

MSRP new: $12,499 (2001) to $16,499 (2008)

Blue Book retail value: $5545 (2001) to $8635 (2008)

Basic specs: A 1795cc, fuel-injected, liquid-cooled V-Twin with tomato-can-sized 101mm (3.97-inch) pistons and an incredibly long, 112mm (4.4-inch) stroke. The 52-degree Vee pounded out 89 hp at 5200 rpm and 98.9 ft.-lb. of torque way down at 2850 revs. Despite its considerable heft (727 lb. dry), the VTX clocked a very respectable 12.12-second quarter-mile time at 108.6 mph and hit a measured top speed of 125 mph.

Why it won: For years, we had waited for a metric cruiser that embodied the kind of brute, low-rpm stonk that was supposed to be the trademark of big-inch V-Twins. But not until the VTX did one appear. Our May, 2001, test of the bike described the 1800's engine performance this way: "Snap the throttle open at virtually any rpm in first or second gear and the beast positively lunges forward. Or spins the tire. What fun!"

From the 1991 Ten Best story: "Honda's VTX1800 is a good-looking and, equally importantly, hard-running cruiser that will likely set the direction for boulevard bikes for years to come."

Useful resources: You will find practically anything about the VTX1800 you could imagine on the Internet. In addition to a very useful site for the VTX Owners Association (www.vtxoa.com), there are countless others dedicated to VTX sales, parts and accessories, including xchoppers.com, an operation that offers a wide variety of custom parts and pieces for all model years of that Honda V-Twin. Plus, there are numerous VTX forums, along with quite a few sites that offer reviews and technical information regarding this popular cruiser.
