SX Pics: 2010 AMA Supercross, Round 2

Racing doesn't get much better than at Round 2 of the AMA Supercross series, held this past weekend in Phoenix, Arizona. Anything can happen, and it did. Luckily, Cycle World photographer Jeff Allen was there to capture the action. Ryan Dungey's surprising speed from Round 1 in Anaheim carried over to Phoenix, where the 450cc class rookie led the Main from start to finish.

In the second heat race, reigning champ James Stewart collided in mid-air with Kyle Partridge. Both riders hit the ground hard. Stewart, in visible pain, managed to walk off the track under his own power. He came back to win the last-chance qualifier. In the Main, Stewart and Chad Reed, the 2008 titlist, were battling mid-pack when they came together in a turn. Both riders went down in what can only be described as a "racing accident." Unfortunately, Reed suffered a broken hand and was forced to pull out of the race—his second DNF in two weeks. Stewart, meanwhile, was able to remount and finish 15th.

The Lites class was exciting as ever, with a six-rider freight train running up front most of the race. Geico Powersports Honda rider Blake Wharton led the majority of the laps. He was eventually passed by Suzuki's Ryan Morais and Pro Circuit's Jake Weimer. Weimer took the lead from Morais on lap 14 and scored the victory.
