Following the recent sales success of its 649cc parallel-Twin platform—the Ninja 650R and Versys—Kawasaki's 2009 model range adds a new member to the family, the ER-6n streetfighter, along with an updated version of the 650R. Additionally, the new KLX250SF takes supermoto styling to the street in a light, nimble package.
Think of the $6399 ER-6n as a tougher-styled version of the 650R. Both bikes share updated engine and chassis components, but it's the semi-naked styling that gives the ER its visual character. Aggressive bodywork shows off the bike's frame and engine instead of cloaking them under plastic.
Both models have revised fuel-injection settings for the liquid-cooled, dohc, 8-valve parallel-Twin aimed at improved low- to midrange power output. Internal coolant passages eliminate ugly hoses and simplify the cooling system. Much attention was focused on eliminating vibration. A new upper-rear engine mount, rubber-mounted handlebars and rubber-covered footpegs help reduce vibes felt by the rider and passenger.
Both bikes use the same trellis frame that features an offset laydown shock with revised settings. Dual 300mm petal discs with twin-piston calipers handle front braking, with lightweight six-spoke alloy wheels at both ends.
Already providing a great combination of performance and practicality, the $6799 Ninja 650R benefits from the previously described changes in addition to aggressive new styling and a revised dash.
Those seeking an economical, fun, lightweight motorcycle with just the right amount of hooligan image may find it in the KLX250SF. Based on the KLX250S dual-sport, the SF is powered by a liquid-cooled, 249cc Single, rides on 17-inch wheels, has shorter suspension travel on its fully adjustable inverted fork and shock, and offers a low, 33.9-inch seat. The KLX is priced at $5299 and should be a fun ride, whether you are riding it to work or hacking it into corners on the weekends.
