As one of the original Zero models, the S started off as a somewhat supermoto-style bike before gradually morphing into the naked roadster it has become today. The S model is looked at as the entry-level machine in the company’s catalog, with a fairly simple build that enables it to have a low price. Although the FX and FXE models have lower prices, the S is still considered as the gateway bike to Zero’s catalog with its lower seat height and less demanding character. The S model’s previous Z-Force 75-5 motor produced 78 lb.-ft. of torque with a peak of 46 hp at 4,300 rpm, which was more than enough to propel the 313-pound bike (with the 7.2kWh battery) to 98 mph with ease. Another plus that you don’t find on other gateway models is fully adjustable suspension, with the S offering up rebound and compression damping adjustment at both ends in addition to spring preload.
For 2024, the S received many of the same updates as other models in Zero’s lineup received. Regarding the S, that includes upgrades to both the motor and battery pack. The Z-Force 75-5 motor gets replaced by the new 75-7 motor that delivers 97 lb.-ft. of torque, with a peak of 68 hp at 4,500 rpm; while a 22-hp jump sounds huge, it should be noted that a 19 lb.-ft. increase in torque is something that is much more immediately felt when you ride. Apparently Zero is finding that customers want more power and range rather than light weight, as the S also gets the larger-capacity 14.4kWh battery that has twice the energy storage as the old model. That translates to a near doubling of range, with the combined city/highway rating jumping from 60 miles to 113 miles. Unfortunately that larger-capacity battery also adds considerable heft, with the S model’s curb weight ballooning from 313 pounds to 492 pounds. Top speed is now a claimed 104 mph, with seat height dropping from 31.8 to 31.0 inches.
