Built using the company’s long-running FXS supermoto-style motorcycle, Zero’s FXE is mostly based on the 2018 concept bike built by Huge Design in San Francisco. Employing sleeker bodywork along with a round LED headlight/taillight and ADV-style front “beak” replacing the FXS’s off-road-style front fender, the FXE also does away with the FXS’s swappable 3.6kWh battery setup in favor of a single larger non-swappable 7.2kWh unit for more range. The FXE also replaces the FXS’s aging LCD dash with a full-color 5-inch TFT display that also includes smartphone connectivity using Zero’s NextGen app that allows access to charge times, speed and regeneration levels, customizable secondary dash display, etc. These features are all built on the firm’s Cypher II operating system that permits automatic firmware updates via Wi-Fi as well as modular feature improvements in the future.
While the FXE’s so-called “essential surfaces”—seats, body panels, touch points—are intended to look like they’re “floating” over the chassis with a distinctive styling that radiates modern industrial design aesthetics, the rest of the bike is all FXS. Seat height is the same at 32.9 inches, as is the Z-Force 75-5 air-cooled interior permanent magnet brushless motor that churns out 78 lb.-ft. of torque and 46 hp at 4,300 rpm. Suspension remains identical, with a 41mm Showa inverted cartridge fork featuring spring preload, rebound, and compression damping adjustability with 7.0 inches of travel up front, and a single Showa shock with spring preload, rebound, and compression damping adjustability boasting 8.9 inches of travel in the rear. Cast aluminum wheels are shod with Pirelli Diablo Rosso II rubber in 110/70-17 and 140/70-17 sizes. Range with the 7.2kWh battery is limited to about 60–70 real-world miles, and charging can only be done using the standard 110/120V charger that requires 9.7 hours to top off from a low state of charge; a rapid charger is available for additional cost that will do the job in a little more than 3 hours.
The 2024 Zero FXE is available in white or Jet Black/Gray starting at $12,495.
