Originally launched in 2018, the Yamaha XMAX scooter helps fill some of the void left with the demise of the TMAX 530 maxi-scooter that was discontinued in the North American market after 2016. The XMAX is actually the third generation of this scooter that has been sold in Europe since 2005, and was a brand-new design from the ground up. The liquid-cooled 292cc SOHC four-valve single-cylinder engine boasts some trick touches like an aluminum cylinder with ceramic piston bore, and a semi-dry-sump oiling system that helps reduce friction and drag inside the engine. The XMAX also has traction control and ABS to help expand the safety envelope, along with Yamaha’s “Smart Key” keyless ignition. Handlebars are adjustable fore/aft by 20mm (0.8 inch), and the windscreen can be adjusted to one of two positions that are 2 inches apart. The XMAX has a huge underseat storage compartment, with the two-tier space able to accommodate two full-face helmets.
The XMAX was updated in 2023, with the biggest change being revised styling and a sharper, more modern look. The LED lighting is updated, with distinctive “X” features in the headlight and taillight of the new machine. Ergonomics have been tweaked, with a new seat that is shaved down on each side to help make the reach to the ground easier for shorter riders. The XMAX also gets high-level turn indicators that are easier to spot by other motorists as you are zipping through the traffic. Tech-wise the new bike is also revised, including a neat looking 4.2-inch TFT screen with a 3.2-inch LCD speedometer screen above it, Bluetooth connectivity, and Garmin mapping which is full screen and very easy to use.
The 2024 Yamaha XMAX is available in Granite Gray for $6,199.
