BASIC SPECS: A liquid-cooled 1,199cc DOHC parallel twin featuring traction-enhancing 270-degree firing interval and YCC-T ride-by-wire fuel injection with adjustable traction control provides intuitive torque-rich delivery. A low-maintenance shaft drive feeds power to the standard, street-oriented 17-inch rear radial quite well, while fitment of more off-road-capable rubber is a viable modification due to its 19-inch front wheel size. These, along with 7.5-inch suspension travel, under-engine skid plate, and a wide tubular handlebar with hand guards, all offer the form and function of a modern ADV machine.

WHY IT'S DESIRABLE: As Yamaha's answer to a fast-growing adventure segment, the Super Ténéré makes an ideal workday commuter while proving very comfortable for long-range travel and quite capable during light-duty off-road use. Its detachable aluminum pannier side bags and optional matching top trunk quickly convert this multi-use platform from basic heavyweight dual-sport into a world-class explorer. Its adjustable-height windscreen and saddle, cruise control, and 6.1-gallon fuel capacity all make covering large chunks on the map a reality.

THE COMPETITION: Widely viewed as an affordable alternative to European-built ADVs, this Yamaha has fared well on the sales floor against the likes of the BMW R1100/1200GS, KTM 990/1290 Adventure, and Ducati Multistrada 1200. More rugged than the Suzuki V-Strom 1000 Adventure, the Super T faces a new challenger in the all-new Honda Africa Twin.
