Valentino Rossi's poor luck continued this week. After crashing on the last lap at Le Mans only four corners from the checkered flag, the nine-time world champion suffered an incident on Thursday afternoon while riding motocross.
Rossi was at the Cross Park Cavallara, which is around 40 minutes from his ranch in Tavullia. The 38-year-old Italian was taken to the “Ospedale Infermi” in Rimini, where he was diagnosed with mild thoracic and abdominal trauma.
A press release from Rossi’s Movistar Yamaha Team confirmed that no fractures had been detected and no serious trauma found. Rossi spent the night in the hospital, where he was visited by his father, Graziano, and mother, Stefania.
Medical checks confirmed that Rossi is making progress with his recovery. He said that he is experiencing less pain than last night. The discomfort stems from liver and kidney lesions that have not created further complications.
When results from routine tests came back positive, Rossi was discharged at 5:30 p.m. from the hospital. At the moment, Rossi’s participation in the Italian Grand Prix, scheduled for June 2-4, doesn’t appear to be in jeopardy.
“The priority now is that he is recovering well,” read a team statement. “Once at home, he will see how things evolve and then we can think at the Italian GP.” Rossi is currently third overall in points, trailing teammate Maverick Vinales and Repsol Honda’s Dani Pedrosa.
Meanwhile, preparations are underway to welcome the sold-out sixth round of the MotoGP world championship. In many cases, fans have waited the entire year to pack the Tuscan hills and celebrate their champion.
