Former MotoGP World Champion/AMA Superbike champion and current Honda WSBK racer Nicky Hayden is in serious condition at an Italian hospital after being struck by a car while cycling by himself in Riccione, Italy. Sources tell us that Hayden sustained major head and torso injuries in the accident, and as of 11:00 AM PST, had been airlifted from the Riccione hospital to a medical trauma center in Cesena, where he is now in the ICU unit. Sources say that originally doctors planned to perform surgery to remove and relieve the pressure caused by the cerebral hematoma, but the nature and severity of the head trauma forced them to postpone that direction. Hayden also suffered numerous other major injuries in the accident, but doctors won't have any prognosis there until they stabilize the head injury and Hayden recovers.

More details as we get them.
