Michael Dunlop made history on the opening day of racing at the Isle of Man TT. The Hawk Racing BMW rider shattered the lap and race records to record the first ever sub-17 minute lap of the Mountain Course and take the win in Superbike.

Dunlop dipped under the 17-minute mark not once, but twice, delivering a decisive blow to the competition in the first two laps of the race. The quickest of the two was 133.393 mph to beat Tyco BMW’s Ian Hutchinson by 19 seconds to take his 12th career TT victory. Hutchison himself was also inside the outright lap record, but Dunlop’s race winning time was a staggering 1:15.643 inside the old race record. Joining the pair on the podium was Honda Racing’s John McGuinness.

Further back, GBMoto Racing Kawasaki’s Peter Hickman was charging and after lapping in excess of 131 mph on his fourth lap, he posted his best lap on the sixth and final lap with a speed of 132.465 mph to take his best ever TT position in fourth.

Silicone Engineering Kawasaki's Dean Harrison was fifth ahead of Michael Rutter on the Bathams SMT Racing BMW. David Johnson's excellent ride on the Norton ended with a brilliant seventh place and a new best lap by the Norton at 130.872 mph. Padgetts Honda's Bruce Anstey brought the RC213V-S home in eighth. Rounding out the top 10 was a pair of BMWS - Team Penz13.com's Gary Johnson and East Coast Construction Burdens' Lee Johnston.

In the race for the TT Privateer’s Championship, Daniel Hegarty took the maximum 25 points after finishing 13th overall, also posting a new personal best lap of the Mountain Course at 128.341 mph.
