Honda | 2014 Sportbike Buyer's Guide

Research new Honda motorcycles. Sport Rider has specifications and price comparisons of many 2014 Honda sportbike models.

HONDA VFR1200F/DCT $TBD
Engine: L-C 16V 1237 V-4 Seat Height: 32.1 in. Wheelbase: 60.8 in.

As we went to press, there was no official word from Honda that the VFR1200 would be back for '14, but as the company's technology showpiece, it's a safe bet that some version will be included in the lineup. That technology includes a Combined-ABS, traction control, and the optional Dual Clutch Transmission with paddle-style or fully automatic shifting.

Honda CBR1000RR/ABS/SP $TBD
Engine: L-C 16V 999 inline-four Seat Height: 32.2 in. Wheelbase: 55.5 in.

Honda’s literbike is updated with a new cylinder head and exhaust system along with more aggressive ergonomics. The SP version boasts Öhlins suspension, Brembo brakes, hand-selected pistons and connecting rods, and a special paint scheme. The standard version is available in black or white for ’14; the C-ABS model is offered in standard white only.

Honda CBR600RR/ABS $11,490/$12,490
Engine: L-C 16V 599 inline-four Seat Height: 32.3 in. Wheelbase: 53.9 in.

After an update last year that included MotoGP-derived aerodynamics and styling, ECU improvements for more midrange power, and a Showa Big Piston fork, Honda’s middleweight contender returns unchanged for 2014—even the price is the same. Color options for this year include black, red, or white/blue/red, with the C-ABS model in red only.

Honda CB1000R $TBD
Engine: L-C 16V 998 inline-four Seat Height: 32.1 in. Wheelbase: 56.9 in.

Honda says: “Think of a fighter, standing in the ring. Boots, trunks, gloves, and plenty of muscle. That’s the Honda CB1000R, a machine that offers superbike performance, a comfortable, do-it-all riding position, and sense of style that’s off the charts.” Sounds about right to us. The naked CB is offered in this cool matte gray metallic scheme for 2014.

Honda CB1100/ABS $TBD
Engine: A-C 16V 1140 inline-four Seat Height: 31.3 in. Wheelbase: 58.7 in.

Another model that hadn't been officially released for 2014 as we went to press, we hope the CB1100 retro-bike will be carried over. The new CB might be styled like the original 1969 CB750, with an air-cooled engine in a steel-tube frame and no bodywork, but in hard parts it's up to date with fuel injection and triple disc brakes with optional Combined-ABS. Update: Honda announced a new CB1100 for 2014, details are at the link below.

Honda NC700X/DCT $TBD
Engine: L-C 8V 670 inline-twin Seat Height: 32.7 in. Wheelbase: 60.6 in.

The adventure model from Honda’s New Concept line that borrows heavily from the automotive world, we called it “affordable, practical, and fun (in its own way)” when we rode it. The NC returns unchanged for ’14 and is available in standard trim or with DCT (Dual Clutch Transmission) and ABS. Both versions are offered in red or black.

Honda CBR500R/ABS $5,999/$6,499
Engine: L-C 8V 500 inline-twin Seat Height: 30.9 in. Wheelbase: 55.5 in.

The trio of 500cc sportbikes introduced by Honda last year provides a nice middle ground between the introductory CBR250 and the company’s middleweight offerings. The sportiest of those models, the CBR500R, features aerodynamic bodywork and is offered in black, white/blue/red, and red; the ABS model is available in black only.

Honda CB500X/ABS $5,999/$6,499
Engine: L-C 8V 500 inline-twin Seat Height: 31.9 in. Wheelbase: 55.9 in.

“The CB500X fulfills the idea of owning an adventure-style bike that can take you out in search of new roads, undiscovered places, and fun sights to see,” Honda says in the X model’s press material. This version offers a large-capacity fuel tank, open ergonomics, and an adjustable windscreen and is available in Pearl White this year.

Honda CB500F/ABS $5,499/$5,999
Engine: L-C 8V 500 inline-twin Seat Height: 30.9 in. Wheelbase: 55.5 in.

The F version of the three 500cc models is our favorite, and we wrote that “The naked-bike version of Honda’s new parallel twin epitomizes what the CB family is all about,” when we tested it last year. All three 500s are mechanically unchanged for this year; the CB500F is offered in black or white, with the ABS model in black only.

Honda CBR250R/CBR300R/ABS $TBD
Engine: L-C 4V 286 single Seat Height: 30.5 in. Wheelbase: 53.9 in.

While Honda introduced a 286cc CBR300R at the China International Motorcycle Trade Exhibition late last year intended to better compete with the oversize Kawasaki Ninja 300, there was no word from American Honda if the new model would be imported here. The 250 might be carried over into 2014, but expect the 300 as an early-release 2015 model.

Honda Grom $2,999
Engine: A-C 2V 125 single Seat Ht: 29.7 in. Wheelbase: 47.2 in.

Honda touts the all-new Grom as “a fresh, new way to add some fun, practicality, independence, and style to your life.” It might be pitbike small, but it is completely street legal and has big-bike features such as two-up capability, disc brakes, fuel injection, a four-speed transmission, and digital instrumentation. Offered in red or black for this year.
