Aprilia has unveiled its latest 2017 RSV4 and Tuono V4 1100 series sportbikes at Intermot, and both models feature a host of updates that are sure to provide even more outstanding performance. Biggest changes are centered around the APRC electronics suite, with new features added and others refined. There are plenty of numerous updates internally to the engine and suspension as well.

Both the RSV4 RR and RF, and the Tuono V4 1100 RR and Factory models benefit from a more refined APRC electronics package. The fourth generation APRC system boasts a new full ride-by-wire throttle that allows many of the previous throttle body electronic management components to be jettisoned, thereby cutting 590 grams from the assembly. The inertial accelerometer platform has been repositioned on the bike for more accurate detection of the bike’s dynamic position and movement.

The “more fine-tuned logic” eight-level (plus off) traction control system now is adjustable using a joystick pad on the left handlebar, and can be changed on the fly without letting off the throttle. Wheelie control has the same three-level (plus off) adjustment as before, and can also be adjusted on the fly using the same keypad. Aprilia Launch Control now has new “operating strategies”, and the electronic quickshifter now performs downshifts as well as upshifts. New for ’17 are a Pit Lane Speed Limiter, as well as cruise control.

Bosch’s 9.1MP Cornering ABS is also standard, and has three levels of sensitivity or can be switched off if desired. Any of the three Cornering ABS settings can be combined with any of the three Ride Modes (Sport, Track, and Race), which have revised settings for even better performance. The instrument panel on both bikes is now a TFT (thin film transistor) display to allow bright colors and better contrast, and a new version of the V4-MP multimedia platform has been developed for less battery drain on your smartphone and a larger selection of race circuits to choose from.

The RSV4 engine gets a new exhaust to meet Euro 4 regulations with a silencer using a double oxygen sensor and built-in valve. Maximum rpm is now 300 rpm higher, and this broader range means the variable timing intake ducts have been eliminated for less weight. New pistons are lighter and have been redesigned to reduce blow-by at high rpm, and the connecting rod heads have a honing treatment in the small end to reduce friction. New valve springs deal with the higher rpm capability, while down below a new linear sensor for the electronic quickshifter ensures positive gearshifts.

The RSV4 RF gets the latest Öhlins NIX fork and TTX shock, with a new progressive linkage in the rear suspension; Öhlins steering damper is also included. Brembo’s superb M50 monoblock calipers now bite on larger and thicker 330 x 5mm discs for improved braking power.

The Tuono V4 1100 RR and Factory versions both get a new exhaust with double oxygen sensor and built-in valve similar to the RSV4, and maximum rpm has been increased by 500 rpm. The engine ECU is all-new with increased and faster calculating capability, and the 1077cc V-four powerplant gets the same con-rod small end honing process as the new RSV4. The combustion chambers on each cylinder head are now CNC machined for more accurate flow and combustion control, and the same brake upgrades as the RSV4 (plus radial master cylinder) make their way to both the RR and Factory Tuonos.
