Let's be honest, motorcycle video games have been a pretty big disappointment thus far. Well, besides Excitebike and Road Rash of course. Valentino Rossi - The Game is looking to change all that and, despite my skepticism, I think they might have actually done it. I mean, you get to play as Rossi atop his Yamaha M1 MotoGP race bike, a Yamaha R1M, a YZ450F flat track bike, his Ford Mustang drift car, or his Ford Focus rally car.
Valentino Rossi - The Game features 291 riders ranging from this season's current roster to 90 different historical riders. It contains 47 total tracks including 18 MotoGP tracks, as well as the new Austrian Red Bull Ring circuit, various car tracks, and Rossi's Ranch. And then there are the bikes, which allow you to choose from the current crop of MotoGP bikes to various bikes Vale has raced in the past.
I tried out Ride and was fairly unimpressed with the gameplay experience and options as far as bikes, upgrades, and tracks. Their gear collection was pretty cool, and it was fun to play as a rider wearing the things I actually wear on a daily basis, but that doesn't last long at keeping my attention.
Valentino Rossi - The Game is based on the same framework as the MotoGP video games, which have had the best gameplay physics so far. The videos of the gameplay all actually look pretty good, but it's hard to trust those things until we get the game here in our hands.
The game went on sale today for Playstation 4, XBOX One, PC, and Steam, in a variety of different levels of packages. Give us a few weeks to get a copy in and brush up on our skills, and then you'll get your chance to take on some Cycle World staffers.
