The dramatic red-flagged conclusion to the 2019 Suzuka 8 Hours race left many confused, but the fastest rider was never in doubt. Jonathan Rea’s consistent pace was the foundation of Kawasaki’s victory, and the World Superbike championship point leader had a slight edge on the factory Yamaha trio throughout most of the race until the fateful final stint in which Alex Lowes began to claw back time.
Don’t underestimate the impressive job done by the Kawasaki Racing Team at Suzuka. The World Superbike team came to Suzuka and conquered one of the hardest races on the motorcycle racing calendar. It did so with only two official tests, no Japanese test rider, and using Bridgestone tires compared to their usual Pirellis. Rea, Leon Haslam, and Toprak Razgatlioğlu had to learn endurance racing strategies and be fast and efficient in the pits. They had a mountain to climb, and they reached the summit.
