In 2015, BMW Motorrad surprised the world when it unleashed the S 1000 XR, a four-cylinder adventure GT that proved as agile and friendly as their celebrated R 1200/1250 GS. Now it has unveiled the second generation of that model.

2020 BMW S 1000 XR Updates

As already mentioned in a Cycle World sneak preview, the new BMW S 1000 XR is slightly lighter than the previous and is powered by an evolved edition of the outstanding S 1000 inline-four which generates the same claimed 162 hp at 11,000 rpm while complying with the latest Euro 5 emission standards. The renewed unit features a 12.5:1 compression ratio—a 0.5 increase. The higher compression ratio, in combination with revised camshaft profiles that now include BMW's new variable timing and lift ShiftCam system, improves the torque in its peak value, now claiming 84 pound-feet at 9,250 rpm. The entire torque curve from 3,000 rpm and up has been increased for additional flexibility and drivability.

Gear ratios have been modified in fourth, fifth, and sixth gear—all 8 percent taller to reduce corresponding engine speed and decrease fuel consumption with it. The engine is lighter by 11 pounds, narrower by about a half inch, and slightly shorter due to the rods that are 4mm shorter at 99mm. Lighter and more compact, the engine has been called to play a determinant role in the structure of the chassis, being extensively integrated within the structure of the new frame.

In addition to the totally revised frame/engine structure, the new chassis features a reduced steering axis caster, from 25.5 degrees to 24.9 degrees, but marginally reduced trail from 117 to 116mm, while the wheelbase has been increased to 61.1 inches.

Among the options offered are ABS Pro, adaptive turning lights, and HP Shift Assistant Pro for quick clutchless up- and downshifts.

The ergonomics have been honed for ultimate long-haul comfort and the bodywork is claimed to offer ample protection from wind pressure and weather insults. The seat is set at 33 inches above the ground and at this time there is no indication of alternative seat heights.

S 1000 XR
BMW’s second-generation S 1000 XR may not make more horsepower but it is Euro 5 compliant and features the ShiftCam system that found its way into the S 1000 RR earlier this year.BMW Motorrad

The instrumentation uses a new instrument cluster with a generous 6.5-inch TFT screen and four screen displays. The new S 1000 XR looks aggressively styled along the present adventure GT style with a front beak included. Overall, the new look is impressive; we look forward to testing the second generation of the BMW S 1000 XR.
