While virtually every manufacturer has at least a couple of models under the adventure heading, most of them are better suited to a daily commute or some light dirt-road touring than truly venturing far from civilization. But when KTM puts the tags "Adventure," "R," and "Rally" together on one bike you can be sure it's a serious piece of off-road equipment.

Just 500 examples of the new KTM 790 Adventure R Rally will be made and, as the name suggests, it's an uprated derivative of the parallel-twin-powered 790 Adventure R. With an MSRP of $19,499, it's $6,000 pricier than the existing Adventure R and $7,000 more than the 790 Adventure. That's a lot of money, but the 790 Adventure R Rally is a very serious motorcycle.

That additional $6,000 will buy you upgraded suspension, D.I.D Dirt Star rims, a new seat, and graphics. And a whole lot of off-road capability.KTM

2020 KTM Adventure R Rally vs. Adventure R

Upgrades over the Adventure R include a titanium Akrapovič silencer and much higher-spec suspension. As usual for KTM, it comes from WP, but the Adventure R Rally's fork is the firm's Xplor Pro 7548, with cone valves claimed to reduce harshness. At the back is an Xplor Pro 6746 shock; on the aftermarket, those suspension parts alone would cost around as much as the price difference between the 790 Adventure R and Adventure R Rally.

They give the bike 270mm (10.6 inches) of suspension travel, 30mm (1.2 inches) more than the 790 Adventure R, and the suspension is just the start of the upgrades. The Rally also gets D.I.D Dirt Star rims, 21-inch front and 18-inch rear, and a new seat that’s even flatter than that of the Adventure R to emphasize the off-road intentions and allow for ease of rider movement. Let’s face it, you’re really expected to be standing on the Rally’s pegs, not sitting down.

Only 500 examples of the 2020 KTM 790 Adventure R Rally will be available worldwide.

The 790 Adventure R Rally retains rider-aids that include multiple riding modes, traction control, Bluetooth connectivity, and an up/down quickshifter. There’s even cruise control.

For the average rider, the KTM 790 Adventure R Rally probably won’t be a convincing argument to part with nearly $20,000, but it’s not aimed at casual adventurers. Selling 500 of the bikes worldwide to hardcore enthusiasts is, however, unlikely to be a problem.
