Honda’s Cool New Concept Bikes

Two new Groms, the three-wheel Neowing, some eye-catching CB1100s and an electric Super Cub highlight Honda Tokyo Motor Show concepts.

Honda Motor Company just unveiled three new concept motorcycles that will be seen in the flesh for the first time next month at the 44th Tokyo Motor Show, which runs from October 30 through November 8.  According to Honda, its “The Power of Dreams” display will feature “a broad range of items including innovative mobility products that are useful in people’s daily lives as well as a lineup of mobility products topped by racing machines that pursue excellence in driving and riding performance.” Included among these are the these three innovative motorcycle concepts:

Light Weight Super Sports Concept

Honda says this machine, a next-generation supersport concept, is designed to have “strong presence,” thanks to a high-performance look that comes from its long nose and crouched riding position. The surfaces, says Honda, are designed to create a sense of hardness and solidity, aided by sharp edges that up the aggression. Matte-black paint and low-contrast graphics effective at giving this machine a serious dose of attitude. It seems likely to be a CBR250RR or perhaps 300RR supersport single with a lighter weight tubular chassis, plus upgraded wheels, brakes and tires. The swingarm is aluminum instead of steel and the fork is inverted vs. the current streetbike’s conventional unit. Spec racing class anyone?

Now here’s a three-wheel Honda not anything like the original ATC. It’s called the Neowing, and it’s designed to offer “the cornering feel and sporty ride of a large-sized motorcycle while realizing excellent stability at low speeds.” Even more unexpected, the Neowing has a hybrid powertrain that combines a horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine with electric motors for plentiful torque and powerful acceleration. With an original Honda linkage mechanism for the front wheel, the Neowing concept has been styled in a way that emphasizes the mechanical nature of a two-wheeled motorcycle model, even though it has three wheels.

EV-Cub Concept

The EV-Cub Concept is a personal short-distance commuter that stays true to the “easy-to-handle and economical motorcycle” theme that Honda applied originally to the first-generation Super Cub. By placing the heavy battery low in the middle of the body, Honda makes it easy for the rider to mount and dismount this new electric concept. The low center of gravity, together with a concentration of mass, helps the maneuverability of the EV-Cub Concept. Of note, the battery is easily detachable and able to be charged using a standard home wall socket.

Other Treats

Honda also provided some photos (but unfortunately no information) for six other models that look very intriguing. These include a sweet-looking pair of Grom50 Scramblers (Concept-One and Concept-Two), plus a deliciously retro Super Cub Concept. And lastly, Honda will display at Tokyo the Concept CB, the racy-looking CB1100 Concept and a CB1300 Super Bol D’Or Concept.

Clearly, the folks at Honda have been busy building some fun idea bikes, and we like what we see. Which of these Honda concepts would you like to see in production?
