Dark green with custom “Dust Tite” shell, original mattress (?!) and more.

Steve McQueen 1952 Chevy Camper

I thought Steve McQueen mania would begin to subside at least 5 years ago. Man, have I been wrong. His pretty sweet 1976 Porsche 930 Turbo sold at auction in Monterey recently for $1.95 million and it seems everything the actor has owned evokes a wallet exploding nostalgia in motorheads.

Whoever got that Porsche can have it. I’ll take this 1952 Chevrolet 1-ton pickup with “Dust Tite” camper shell by Northern Sheet Metal of Yreka, California.

The condition of the truck is remarkable, and the galvanized-steel and wood camper shell is period perfect. As of this writing bidding on ebay was fast approaching $100,000 and reserve hadn't been met.

The truck appears to have been maintained ready to drive, and the seller says as much, stating that it’s how McQueen would have wanted it and that it “drives out straight and strong and is a pleasure to drive.”

From the listing: “The truck was first sold as Lot 626 at the Steve McQueen Estate Auction November 24-25, 1984, at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas, Nevada. It includes the original engine, body, frame and Forest Green paint. Other noteworthy features include a 6-cylinder engine, 4-speed transmission, 5-gallon gas tanks on running boards, a driver’s side spotlight, sun visor and two toolboxes. Also includes the original mattress and license plates.”

Original mattress? Hmm.

The listing shows the original California title with McQueen’s name, and documentation from the 1984 estate auction at the Imperial Palace in Las Vegas. It looks to have been beautifully preserved.

Ten percent of the proceeds from the auction will benefit Boys Republic, a school for troubled youth that McQueen attended and is credited as a 1949 alumnus. He supported the school through the rest of his life.

Bumper mount for a Triumph Trophy, anyone? See you in the desert!
