Wayne Rainey Remembers

The three-time 500cc world champion describes his paralyzing crash.

Wayne Rainey is synonymous with Grand Prix motorcycle racing, but life for the three-time 500cc world champion has been very different since his career-ending crash 20 years ago at Italy’s Misano World Circuit.

I spoke with Rainey, now 53, about his accident at his home in Monterey, California. “After only about 10 or 11 laps, I felt like I had done the entire race,” he recalled. “I was exhausted. I had just over a second on , and that is where I made my mistake: I went into the corner too hot.”

Rainey also discussed his more recent health issues. Listen to the accompanying sound bite and read the full interview, "Wayne's World," in the December issue of Cycle World magazine, on newsstands now.
