A full-size dirt-capable dual sport motorcycle can easily put you into a five-figure price tag these days. But for those yearning for a decent-performing trail bike with a license plate, check out the KLX300 from Kawasaki. As the dual sport sibling of the KLX300R trail bike, the KLX300 carries much of the same capability including the 292cc four-stroke single-cylinder engine and adjustable long-travel suspension while also running a headlight, taillights, mirrors, and all the necessary bits and bobs to make it street-legal.
The KLX300 chassis stems from Kawasaki’s trail bike platform, meaning it is not a competition-derived model (i.e., stemming from the KX platform). With a focus on trail fun rather than checkered flags, the chassis is more comfortable and compliant on trail obstacles such as rocks and roots. In the suspension department, you’ll find 10 inches of travel on the fork and 9.1 inches on the rear shock, as well as damping adjustability on both front and rear components, a fairly rare feature for motorcycles of this price point. Power is supplied by the 292cc single-cylinder engine with fuel injection and liquid-cooling for ideal performance and longevity. A highway mile-eater it is not, but a six-speed transmission makes sure you can run the freeway speeds needed to link the trails together.
Kawasaki’s KLX300 was already a great bang for the buck, but a recent price drop sweetens the deal even more. The 2025 Kawasaki KLX300 is now available for $5449. Who says things are only getting more expensive?
