2014 Suzuki Burgman 200 ABS - First Look

An entry-level scooter equipped with big-bike luxury features.

Suzuki has completed its scooter trinity: Burgman 650 ABS, Burgman 400 ABS and, now, coming to the US next spring as a 2014 model, the Burgman 200 ABS. Mirroring the swoopy, full-wrap styling and neutral body color of its larger siblings, the smallest of the three Burgmans is powered by a liquid-cooled, fuel-injected, four-valve, 200cc single-cylinder engine producing a claimed 18.1 horsepower at 8,000 rpm and 12.5 pound-feet of torque at 6,000 rpm.

A well-appointed dash includes an amber-backlit analog speedometer and tachometer, with indicator lights for turn signals, water temperature, ABS, FI and Eco drive. The latter illuminates when the machine is operated in “a fuel-efficient manner.” A large, central liquid-crystal display has a clock, odometer, dual trip meters, a gas gauge, and an oil-change indicator. An opening at the base of the non-adjustable windscreen is said to reduce cockpit turbulence.

Claimed curb weight is 359 pounds, and seat height measures 28.9 inches. The seat itself is narrow at the nose and appears deeply padded, with plenty of room for a passenger. An illuminated 41-liter underseat storage compartment will hold a pair of full-face helmets. Two smaller front bins, one of which locks using the ignition key, add another 5.5 liters of storage. It also houses a 12V DC power outlet for charging phones and other electronic devices.

Accessed through the central tunnel, the 2.8-gallon fuel tank sits low, nestled within a steel tube frame between a conventional 33mm fork and preload-adjustable twin shocks. Single disc brakes fitted to the 13-inch front and 12-inch rear wheels wear sensors that feed the same lightweight Nissin ABS control unit used on the Hayabusa sportbike.

Available in one color, Cool Silver, the 2014 Burgman 200 can be outfitted with a color-matched top case, passenger backrest, heated grips, a specially designed rear rack and a “tunnel” bag. Suggested retail pricing has not been announced and probably won’t be for some weeks. The 2013 650cc and 400cc Burgmans sticker for $10,999 and $7,899, respectively.
