Mecem Auctions Press Release:

Mecum has announced the addition of two vintage, celebrity motorcycles to the upcoming Celebrity Items Auction taking place July 26-27 at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. A 1968 <a title="Husqvarna Motorcycles" href="http://www.cycleworld.com/Husqvarna/"><strong>Husqvarna</strong></a> 250T Commando previously owned by actor Dennis Hopper and a 1971 Husqvarna 400 Cross previously owned and raced by actor Steve McQueen join a growing list of previously announced collectible vehicles including personal cars from Frank Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and actress Bette Davis, alongside cars from films including the Green Hornet, and more!

Perhaps no other figure in acting, other than Steve McQueen, has a legacy so closely tied to motorcycling. Hopper's portrayal of Billy on a cross-country motorcycle trip in “Easy Rider” is credited with revolutionizing Hollywood in the late sixties and firmly established him a counter-culture icon. The actor raced motorcycles with McQueen along the dirt firebreaks from Coldwater Canyon to the Pacific, cruised with the Hells Angels and owned several motorcycles throughout his lifetime.

<img src="http://www.cycleworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Dennis-Hopper_Husqvarna.jpg" alt="Dennis Hopper's Husqvarna" width="590" height="414" />

<strong>Dennis Hopper’s 1968 Husqvarna 250T Commando (Lot F310)</strong>

The Husqvarna 250T is one of only 300 Commando's ever produced and includes many special features: 21” front, single cylinder two-stroke engine, CEV speedometer, headlight, horn and tail light, leather tank bag and single muffler. An original DMV release of liability shows the Husqvarna was originally registered to Dennis Lee Hopper of Venice, California, and will be included in this sale. This is the first time ever a Hopper bike has been offered at auction and Mecum is honored to bringing it across the block.

<img src="http://www.cycleworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Steve-McQueen_Husqvarna.jpg" alt="Steve McQueen's_Husqvarna" width="590" height="474" />

<strong>Steve McQueen’s 1971 Husqvarna 400 Cross (Lot F311)</strong>

The Husqvarna 400 Cross with its signature red and chrome gas tank patch, mud flap, Magura cables, and brake and clutch lever dust covers, is identical to the one McQueen famously rode shirtless on the cover of “Sports Illustrated” and in the whimsical beach scene outside of Camp Pendleton for “<a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/tag/on-any-sunday/" title="On Any Sunday"><strong>On Any Sunday</strong></a>.”

American International Motorcycle Expo Press Release:

The American International Motorcycle Expo is proud to welcome Tucker Rocky/Biker’s Choice, a leading distributor of motorcycle and ATV parts, accessories and apparel, to the inaugural AIMExpo. Set to take place October 16-20, 2013 in Orlando, Florida, AIMExpo is the powersports industry’s first combined trade, consumer and media event in North America.

Tucker Rocky/Biker’s Choice will activate its involvement at AIMExpo in a way never before seen by a distributor participating in a powersports industry event. Taking advantage of the ability to first meet with media and dealers during trade days and later with consumer attendees, the Texas-based distributor will showcase several of its key brands including Speed and Strength, Firstgear, Twin Power, Answer, ProTaper and others.

Educating retailers and consumers on product attributes is an essential component of AIMExpo, and the new opportunity that will spring forth from enthusiastic powersports attendees during consumer days will be answering the question: “Where can I buy this right now?” National retailer and AIMExpo exhibitor Cycle Gear is poised to answer that question, stocking ample inventory of Tucker Rocky/Biker’s Choice leading brands, ensuring consumers have the opportunity to purchase from the lineup while at the show.

Larry Little, Marketplace Events Motorcycle Group VP and General Manager, applauded the major distributor’s innovative approach to the event. “Tucker Rocky/Biker’s Choice is demonstrating real industry leadership and fully embracing the AIMExpo vision,” said Little. “We sincerely appreciate their comprehensive participation and admire their creative, thoughtful utilization of this new show platform. AIMExpo is the singular key national event for the powersports business to promote 2014 product, and we look forward to playing an integral role in growing their brands to both retailers and riders.”

“We see the AIMExpo model as the true future for the industry,” said Hank Desjardins, VP Marketing, Tucker Rocky/Biker’s Choice. “The opportunity to highlight our key brands by revealing new product to the assembled media; interacting with and educating dealers and consumers about our product lines; and doing it all in one place at one time, at the right time of the year shouldn’t be revolutionary, but it is!” He added, “And best of all, the show concept is sure to energize both powersports dealers and consumers in a way that we’ve not seen in North America.”

<strong>AIMExpo will be held on October 16-20, 2013 at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida and will feature both indoor exhibits and outdoor activities at AIMExpo Outdoors.</strong>

Yamaha Factory Racing Press Release:

Following reigning World Champion <a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/tag/jorge-lorenzo/" title="Jorge Lorenzo"><strong>Jorge Lorenzo</strong></a>’s stunning victory in Barcelona at the weekend the <a title="Yamaha Motorcycles" href="http://www.cycleworld.com/yamaha/"><strong>Yamaha</strong></a> Factory Racing Team have concluded two days of successful testing. The Monday test at the Catalunya circuit immediately following the race was followed by a move to Aragon by the Team and a further day of testing today. Riders Lorenzo and Rossi worked through a number of set up changes along with the testing of a new Bridgestone tire.

Lorenzo was also pleased to have improved his set up for the Aragon track, a key step towards a potential win at this year’s Grand Prix and ended the day as the fastest rider, nearly four tenths clear of rival <a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/tag/marc-marquez/" title="Marc Marquez"><strong>Marc Marquez</strong></a>.

Nine-time champion Rossi was pleased to have made a significant step forward in control under heavy braking as well as improved set up for the Aragon circuit. The Italian ended the day in fourth, just under a second from first position.

<img src="http://www.cycleworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/yfr_editorial_use_pictures-14.jpg" alt="Jorge Lorenzo race bike test action" width="590" height="393" />

<h2 style="font-weight:bold;">Jorge Lorenzo #99:</h2>

1st / 1'48.076 / 53 laps

“Compared to normal I’ve been stronger today. At this track normally I suffer many problems in setting up the bike and getting the bike to work like in other tracks. This time from the beginning I have been very competitive with a lot of confidence. Also I think I am in very good shape so I have taken profit of it. I could also test a new tire to put myself in a qualifying situation and I did a very good lap time. We are just testing very little things but it is better than nothing.”

<img src="http://www.cycleworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/yfr_editorial_use_pictures4.jpg" alt="Valentino Rossi in-action shot" width="590" height="393" />

<h2 style="font-weight:bold;">Valentino Rossi #46:</h2>

4th / 1'49.007 / 54 laps

“First of all we modified a bit the setting and also the front fork and now I feel more confident in braking, I can brake deeper and stop the bike in a better way. For me this is the biggest improvement. After this we tried the swing arm like Jorge has it, a little bit more stiff which I like. We tried some other small things; at the end we made a good package that gives me a really good feeling, especially in braking. I’m so happy because until today I didn’t have this feeling in braking, I am always in a bit of trouble. I can’t wait for Assen to understand if this is also improved at other tracks. It is important for the qualification lap because you have to push more in braking. This result is especially important here in Aragon as this is not one of my best tracks. I have not made great races here yet but the pace today and the lap times at the end make me very happy.”

<strong>Wilco Zeelenberg - Team Manager:</strong>

“The result of this test is quite similar to the one in Barcelona two days ago, we tried the same things and they had the same positive outcome. No dramatic things but set up wise and feeling wise the bike improved and Jorge is feeling good. The main target was to get more confidence on the bike and improve the consistency as well. I think we were able to deliver both for him which is very positive. If you have that on two different tracks it says something so let's see if we can use that in the coming races.”

<strong>Massimo Meregalli - Team Director:</strong>

“It has been a really positive test, the first part in Barcelona and the second part here in Aragon. All the items we tested in Barcelona we could reconfirm with positive results here in Aragon. The plan we had to stay there on Monday and test here on Wednesday gave us some really good feedback. I think after the great weekend we had in Barcelona we finish this Spanish trip in a good way. We are ready to go to Assen and we are expecting to go well there as it is a circuit that suits our bike. We are really looking forward to the next race.”

Repsol Media Press Release:

<a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/tag/marc-marquez/" title="Marc Marquez"><strong>Marc Marquez</strong></a>, in his first time at Aragon on the MotoGP machine, completed 71 laps only aboard his 2013 machine and recorded a quicker time than the pole record set by Casey Stoner in 2011 (1'48.451) with a lap of 1'48.434. He and his team will stay for an extra day tomorrow to test some more items on his current bike and also the 2014 prototype.

His teammate <a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/tag/dani-pedrosa/" title="Dani Pedrosa"><strong>Dani Pedrosa</strong></a> completed his testing program on the 2013 bike and also tested the 2014 prototype to give his first feedback to the HRC technicians. He did a total of 62 laps with a best time of 1'48.928 set on his current bike, and will not stay to test tomorrow.

<img src="http://www.cycleworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/jwsigpro_cache_M_2013-aragon-test-d2-p4.jpg" alt="Pedrosa testing Honda's new MotoGP prototype" width="590" height="392" />

<h2 style="font-weight:bold;">Dani Pedrosa #26:</h2>

1:48.928, 62 laps, 315 km.

"It's been a positive day of testing. We focused more on the actual bike doing several tests with different rear shocks to find more grip especially in the exit of the corners. I am quite happy as we found something good. We also did a kind of "shake down" of the 2014 prototype. I did just two exits and a total of nine laps, basically to get the first impression and give to the engineers some feedback. The bike is ok, but at the moment we need more time to understand it, so in the short term I will not use it."

<img src="http://www.cycleworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/jwsigpro_cache_M_2013-aragon-test-d2-p1.jpg" alt="Marc Marquez test session action" width="590" height="392" />

<h2 style="font-weight:bold;">Marc Marquez #93:</h2>

1:48.434, 71 laps, 361 km.

"I am happy with today's test. Aragon is one of my preferred circuits and on a MotoGP bike it is a lot of fun! At the beginning it was difficult, as many of the braking points are blind, but in the end I felt comfortable. We did a good test trying to solve a problem we had in the last couple of races. We did some change in the geometry and we found a good base set up that I believe will be useful also in the coming circuits and not only here. Tomorrow I will do some more tests on the actual bike and then I will try the 2014 prototype. It will be an busy day!"

Motocross Media Press Release:

This Saturday, Southern Maryland's Budds Creek MX Park will host the world's best riders for Round 5 of the 2013 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, sanctioned by AMA Pro Racing. Taking place in Mechanicsville, Md., just an hour outside of the nation's capital, the 23rd Annual Red Bull Budds Creek National will set the stage for two of the most highly contested championships in Pro Motocross history. Current points leader and 2011 champion <a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/tag/ryan-villopoto/" title="Ryan Villopoto"><strong>Ryan Villopoto</strong></a> will go head-to-head with reigning champ <a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/tag/ryan-dungey/" title="Ryan Dungey"><strong>Ryan Dungey</strong></a> in the 450 Class, while Ken Roczen and Eli Tomac will both attempt to become the second repeat winner in the 250 Class as Marvin Musquin looks to secure his third consecutive win at Budds Creek.

<div style="border-top:1px solid #ccc; height:20px;">&nbsp;</div>

<p><strong>2013 High Point 450 Moto 1 Race Recap:</strong></p>
<iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/1Om7U96P87s" frameborder="0" width="590" height="332"></iframe>

<div style="border-top:1px solid #ccc; height:20px;">&nbsp;</div>

Kawasaki's Villopoto captured his third overall victory of the season at High Point Raceway with a clean sweep in the 450 Class, giving the points leader a total of seven moto wins to date. Villopoto's successful season has given him considerable momentum heading into Round 5 this weekend, where he looks to extend his points lead at Budds Creek.

The only rider to beat Villopoto this season is <a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/ktm/" title="KTM Motorcycles"><strong>KTM</strong></a>'s Ryan Dungey, who sits in a close second place in the championship standings. Dungey secured the overall win in Tennessee with a big win in Moto 2. That, paired with a third place in the first moto, allowed Dungey to trump Villopoto's score of (1-4) for the day. Winning at Budds Creek isn't a new concept for the Minnesota native, as he took the win in 2010 and 2012. Additionally, Dungey is the only rider to finish on the podium in all eight moto's thus far, and will look for his second win of 2013 at Budds Creek.

In his first full season in the 450 Class, Team <a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/honda/" title="Honda Motorcycles"><strong>Honda</strong></a>'s Justin Barcia is holding his own amongst the sport's most decorated racers. Barcia's highlight of the season was at Round 3 where he battled with Villopoto and Dungey in both motos, ultimately finishing second overall. Barcia currently sits third in the championship standings with a consistent string of top five finishes. Trey Canard trails his team-mate Barcia in the points, holding fourth place ahead of Mike Alessi.

<img src="http://www.cycleworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/707.jpg" alt="AMA Pro Motocross Racing action" width="590" height="393" />

Last round, <a title="Kawasaki Motorcycles" href="http://www.cycleworld.com/kawasaki/"><strong>Kawasaki</strong></a>'s Tyla Rattray earned his first career podium in the 450 Class with a pair of fourth place finishes. Rattray, a previous winner at Budds Creek in the 250 Class, looks to contest for another podium finish this weekend in the 450 Class.

Through the first four rounds of 250 Class competition, three different riders have stood atop the podium. Last round in Pennsylvania, Marvin Musquin became the first repeat winner in the 250 Class, besting his teammate Ken Roczen for the overall victory. However, it wasn't until Moto 2 at High Point that Musquin secured his first career moto win in the U.S.

<div style="border-top:1px solid #ccc; height:20px;">&nbsp;</div>

<p><strong>High Point Deconstruction: Eli Tomac's Push to the Podium in Moto 2:</strong></p>
<iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/YY_Qy1-xobo" frameborder="0" width="590" height="332"></iframe>

<div style="border-top:1px solid #ccc; height:20px;">&nbsp;</div>

Roczen has been the most dominant rider in the 250 Class this season, holding five of the eight moto wins, as well as the points lead heading into Round 5. But in addition to his team-mate Musquin, Roczen has several riders on his heels in the chase for a championship. Eli Tomac sits in second place in the championship standings, only five points behind Roczen and seven points ahead of Musquin. Tomac captured the overall victory in his home state of Colorado and then went on to secure his second moto win the next week in Tennessee, proving that he will be a championship contender alongside the KTM duo this season.

Currently in the midst of its third decade of motocross competition, Budds Creek is one of the most renowned tracks on the AMA Pro Motocross Championship schedule. Sitting in the shadow of the nation's capital, it is a popular stop for riders and fans alike thanks to its stellar sight lines, thrilling elevation changes, and challenging terrain. The facility has produced some of the most memorable moments in American Motocross since hosting its first national in 1989.

The Red Bull Budds Creek National will be the first of three rounds of the championship broadcast exclusively on NBC. The national network television exposure will bring the action into millions of homes, allowing viewers to see the world's best do battle.

The Red Bull Budds Creek National will commence Saturday, June 22, in Mechanicsville, Md., beginning at 1 p.m. Eastern. Live coverage of the opening motos on FUEL TV and Allisports.com will begin at 1 p.m. Eastern. Moto 2 of the 450 Class will air Live on NBC at 3 p.m., with Live coverage of the 250 Class Moto 2 on NBC Sports at 4 p.m.

AMA Pro Racing Press Release:

The AMA Pro GoPro Daytona SportBike series is back in action this weekend at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, AL, for the <a title="Triumph Motorcycles" href="http://www.cycleworld.com/triumph/"title="Triumph Motorcycles"><strong>Triumph</strong></a> SuperBike Classic.

The top US series for middleweight machinery is coming off an exciting race at Road America in Wisconsin, a round that saw <a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/tag/cameron-beaubier/" title="Cameron Beaubier"><strong>Cameron Beaubier</strong></a> and Jake Gagne split the victories after more of the exciting racing the class has become known for over the years.

The challenge of Barber Motorsports Park is much different than the wide-open, 4-mile circuit that hosted the last race. Barber is a tight, technical track that places an emphasis on getting each corner right. There aren't many places to rest, either, so fitness always plays a part in the races held in the warm Alabama sun.

Beaubier's season has been very successful thus far. The young Californian has his sights set on winning the coveted SportBike crown for <a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/yamaha/" title="Yamaha Motorcycles"><strong>Yamaha</strong></a>. After leading off with two victories and a second-place finish to start the season, Beaubier currently sits atop the point standings heading into Barber.

<div style="border-top:1px solid #ccc; height:20px;">&nbsp;</div>

<p><strong>GoPro Daytona SportBike Race 1 FULL Race (HD) - Road America 2013:</strong></p>
<iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/AdOyls4i1ps" frameborder="0" width="590" height="332"></iframe>

<div style="border-top:1px solid #ccc; height:20px;">&nbsp;</div>

Gagne lies second in the points after three races and is the only man to top Beaubier this year, taking Race 2 at Road America for his second AMA Pro win of his career. The California product built a lot of momentum dating back to the second half of 2012 and has continued it to the early part of 2013.

Garrett Gerloff has also seen his fortunes rise in 2013. The Texan is coming back from an injury that effectively robbed him of his 2012 season and so far he has finished in the top five each time out in 2013 and is ranked third in the points. Gerloff has taken a steady approach to getting up to speed thus far, but insiders expect him to turn up the jets at some point and begin legitimately competing for wins.

JD Beach is also looking for a GoPro Daytona SportBike victory. The Kentucky resident is just two points behind Gerloff in the standings and had two exciting battles with Jake Lewis for podium positions in Wisconsin. Beach has accumulated experience despite his young age and has become a solid competitor in the GoPro Daytona SportBike class.

Class rookie James Rispoli made his mark at Road America, taking a run towards the front and showing the aggressiveness that won him two Motorcycle-Superstore.com SuperSport titles. The New Yorker might be a class newcomer, but he currently sits in fifth in the point standings and has topped many highly-regarded series competitors along the way so far this season.

Fellow class rookie Jake Lewis already has a podium finish to his credit after having earned it in a hard-fought battle with Beach at Road America. Lewis has shown strong speed and potential and it's only a matter of time before the youngster puts himself in position to claim his first GoPro Daytona SportBike win.

Perennial class contender Bobby Fong changed teams after Daytona but the aggressive racer is always looking to add to his AMA Pro win total. Fong earned fifth and sixth in last year's Barber Motorsports Park races.

<div style="border-top:1px solid #ccc; height:20px;">&nbsp;</div>

<a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/tag/elena-myers/" title="Elena Myers"><strong>Elena Myers</strong></a> has been very consistent in 2013, earning top ten results each time out as she continues to learn the ropes in SportBike after a few seasons in SuperSport.

Two veterans looking to reverse their fortunes in 2013 are Dane Westby and Jason DiSalvo. Westby was injured at Daytona and missed the race. He came back for Wisconsin and earned eighth and sixth, but the Oklahoman expects to be on the podium more often than not. DiSalvo has been one of the fastest men in the class for several years but so far his best finish in 2013 is an eighth place effort in Wisconsin.

<em><strong>This weekend's GEICO Motorcycle AMA Pro Road Racing action will be broadcast on CBS Sports Network as part of the CBS Sports Spectacular. American Motorcyclist Association Chair Maggie McNally and several U.S. lawmakers are scheduled to speak at the AMA E15 Fuel for Thought Lobby Day on Wednesday, June 19, at the nation's capital.

The AMA is inviting all motorcyclists to take part in the Washington, D.C., event to help educate lawmakers about the need to research the possible harmful effects of E15 fuel on motorcycle and all-terrain vehicle engines.

E15 is a gasoline formulation that contains up to 15 percent ethanol by volume. Although the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has approved its use in 2001-and-newer light-duty vehicles, which include cars, light-duty trucks and medium-duty passenger vehicles, none of the estimated 22 million motorcycles and ATVs currently in use are on the EPA approved list, and no manufacturer has approved E15 for use in its motorcycles and ATVs. Furthermore, use of E15 may void manufacturers warranties.

"E15 fuel is one of the most important issues that faces motorcyclists today, and I am excited to address this issue at the AMA E15 Fuel For Thought Lobby Day," McNally said. "Motorcycling has been a part of my life since childhood. When I was told that girls don't ride bikes while I was in college, I immediately got my permit. I am now an accomplished rider and instructor. Motorcycling started as a challenge and it has remained one.

"But the face of that challenge has changed. The challenge that I face now is the challenge all motorcyclists face, protecting the future of motorcycling and promoting the motorcycling lifestyle," McNally said.

<img src="http://www.cycleworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/FuelForThought_Banner.jpg" alt="Fuel For Thought Banner" width="590" height="164" />

<strong>U.S. Rep. Tim Griffin (R-Ark.), who will also speak at the rally, said:</strong>

"As the co-chair of the Congressional Motorcycle Caucus, and as a rider, I recognize that there are many important issues affecting us. The AMA's Fuel For Thought initiative is raising critical awareness of the damage EPA-mandated E15 gasoline can do to motorcycle and ATV engines, and I look forward to taking part in this rally."

The lobby day will begin with a motorcycle ride around the U.S. Capitol, followed by a rally. Participants will then visit their congressional delegations' offices to ask for support for legislation that calls for new E15 research into the effects on motorcycles and ATVs.

<em><strong>In addition to McNally and Griffin, other scheduled speakers include U.S. Reps. Jim Sensenbrenner (R-Wis.) Chris Stewart (R-Utah), Tom Petri (R-Wis.) and David Valadao (R-Calif.).</strong></em>

<strong>Sensenbrenner noted:</strong>

"We have a responsibility to ensure Americans operating gas-powered machines are not put at risk due to faulty fuel that has not been sufficiently examined. There have been several tests highlighting E15's harmful effects on engines and their components, but the EPA has dismissed these findings. If E15 is in the marketplace, mis-fueling from residual gas is inevitable, and it will find its way into gas tanks.

"This is especially dangerous for small engines, such as those in motorcycles," Sensenbrenner added. "As a staunch supporter of motorcyclists and their rights, in February I introduced H.R. 875, which would require the EPA to stop the use of E15 until its harmful effects are investigated further."

<strong>Stewart said:</strong>

"I am looking forward to participating in the AMA event on Capitol Hill. The use of E15 is an important issue currently being discussed in Congress. It's great to see Americans from all over the Country coming to Washington to have their voices heard.

"As I noted in our Science Committee hearing a few months ago on this subject, the more E15 is studied, the more concerns are identified regarding potential widespread impacts on a variety of engines," Stewart added. "I think that more scientific testing is necessary before introducing this new fuel."

<strong>Valadao remarked:</strong>

"The federal government has imposed mandates regarding our nation's fuel supply system without fully considering the negative ramifications such regulations would have on motorists and off-roaders alike.

"Furthermore, these mandates have failed to first put in place proper safeguards to prevent mis-fueling and damage to motorcycles and other motor vehicles," Valadao added. "I believe the Environmental Protection Agency should suspend the E15 mandate until further study on E15's effects can be performed and protections against costly damage caused by E15 can be implemented.".

<strong>Tom Cox, president of the Antique Automobile Club of America who will also speak at the rally, said:</strong>

"Between changes in gasoline formulation and motor oils, I think the EPA has early retirement in mind for our vehicles through those means rather than directly legislating them off the roads. Stopping E-15 is an extremely important initiative."

The AMA also supports S. 344, introduced by U.S. Sens. Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) and David Vitter (R-La.) which would overturn the EPA waivers that allow gasoline containing E15 to be used for certain passenger cars and light trucks.

<strong>Supporters of the lobby day include:</strong>

- EagleRider of Falls Church, Va.
- Coleman PowerSports of Falls Church and Woodbridge, Va
- The National Turkey Federation
- National Chicken Council
- National Pork Producers Council
- American Fuel and Petrochemical Manufacturers
- Specialty Equipment Market Association
- Antique Automobile Club of America

Repsol Honda Press Release:

Wet weather prevented the Repsol <a title="Honda Motorcycles" href="http://www.cycleworld.com/honda/"><strong>Honda</strong></a> Team from testing on the first day in Aragon. Instead, Team Technical Director Takeo Yokoyama took the opportunity to present the 2014 RC213V prototype machine to the press that attended the event.

Hopefully the weather will improve tomorrow so the team can begin work on their test program.

<strong>Takeo Yokoyama - Technical Director:</strong>

"This is the prototype of 2014 machine. It is a complete new bike, both in term of engine and chassis. Our plan is to test it now in order to be able to do, eventually, some change before the after race test in Valencia in November. Anyway, if Dani [Pedrosa] and Marc [Márquez] will find something in the bike that they really feel is a big improvement comparing with their actual RC213V, HRC will do its best to provide this already later this season as we already did last year".

Repsol Media Press Release:

Repsol <a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/honda/" title="Honda Motorcycles"><strong>Honda</strong></a> riders place second and third in Catalonia on Dani Pedrosa’s 200th Grand Prix.

The sixth round of the MotoGP World Championship saw action through to the end, as Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez finished second and third, respectively. <a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/tag/jorge-lorenzo/" title="Jorge Lorenzo"><strong>Jorge Lorenzo</strong></a> won the Catalan GP, which was Dani Pedrosa’s 200th Grand Prix appearance. Pedrosa now leads the standings with 123 points, ahead of Lorenzo on 116 and Marquez on 93.

The overtaking at the front occurred in the early stages, but the tension continued right up to the checkered flag. Dani Pedrosa had started from pole, but was overtaken for the hole-shot by Lorenzo as Marquez slotted into third from sixth on the grid.

The trio rode almost side-by-side for the entirety of the race, but Pedrosa experienced difficulties and dropped back. Lorenzo eventually crossed the line with an advantage of 1.763s over the Repsol rider. Marquez also tried to push to the maximum, keeping up with his teammate. He tried to overtake shortly before the end, but a mistake meant that his move was unsuccessful and he would have to settle for third.

<strong>The Repsol Honda Team now focuses their attention on the next round, in the Netherlands in under two weeks time.</strong>

<h2 style="font-weight:bold;">Pedrosa #26:</h2>

2nd at 1.763 sec.

“Today was a bit of a strange race. We could not get maximum performance and physically it was very hard, because of the heat of the bike and the tires. When I tried to open the throttle the bike wobbled in the front and I had to be very careful. We three frontrunners were battling the track conditions today. It was a bit disappointing not to be able to push more, since the differences between us all was minimal.

We rode practically the entire race without any overtaking. It was very easy to make a mistake and in fact, on the closing laps, Marc [Marquez] made one and I had a slide, but in the end we were able to take a very important second place. We expected to do better after yesterday, but we now have an extra twenty points and we continue to lead the standings.”

<h2 style="font-weight:bold;">Marquez #93:</h2>

3rd at 1.826 sec.

“It was a difficult race. We expected it to be tough, but we never imagined that we would be fighting for the podium with Jorge [Lorenzo] and Dani [Pedrosa] and I'm very happy with this result! It gives us confidence after a slightly tricky weekend, as in the end we found the ideal setup.

During the race I learned a lot from riding behind Dani, trying to figure out how to ride a MotoGP bike at this track, and in the end we did quite well. We knew it would be difficult to finish in the top five, but we managed to get on the podium. I can only say I'm thrilled with the result. Now we look to Assen and we'll see if we can improve anything for that race during the test at Aragon.”

Yamaha Factory Racing Press Release:

<a title="Yamaha Motorcycles" href="http://www.cycleworld.com/yamaha/"><strong>Yamaha</strong></a> Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo delivered a perfect performance today in the Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya to take his second consecutive Grand Prix victory, his third of the 2013 season. A scorching start from third on the grid saw the local hero pass pole man <a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/tag/dani-pedrosa/" title="Dani Pedrosa"><strong>Dani Pedrosa</strong></a> almost immediately for the hole-shot into turn one. A classic Lorenzo master class followed with the reigning world champion maintaining a metronome precision over race distance to keep the two following Hondas of Pedrosa and <a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/tag/marc-marquez/" title="Marc Marquez"><strong>Marc Marquez</strong></a> behind. The result closes the gap at the top of the championship standings with Lorenzo now on 116 points, just seven behind leader Pedrosa as they head for the Dutch TT in Assen in two weeks time.

Teammate Valentino Rossi made a good start on his YZR-M1, jumping two places to hold fifth going into turn one. The nine-time champion looked comfortable behind fellow Yamaha rider <a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/tag/cal-crutchlow/" title="Cal Crutchlow"><strong>Cal Crutchlow</strong></a> until the young Brit crashed out, promoting Rossi to fourth. By this time a small gap had grown to the front three riders and despite at times lapping faster than the front he was unable to close the gap, riding a relatively lonely race to fourth at the line. The result gives Rossi 13 points and closes the gap to Crutchlow in fourth to just 11 points.

“A perfect day, to be honest I didn't expect to win, I knew I had some chance but not like in Mugello where I was more convinced we could get the victory. It was really difficult physically as it was the hottest race of the year. I kept pushing 100% all race because any mistake would have been a disaster. I was surprised at the start as I expected to just pass Cal but I passed Dani also. I took profit from it and tried to open the gap but it was not enough to go away, Dani was there and we played some games, I was 0.5 ahead then 0.2; I was going then he was recovering me. Finally because I was tough mentally and never gave up I could open in the last five laps a little gap that was enough to win. The girl who designed my helmet, Anna Vives, is famous in Spain; she is a symbol that people with Down syndrome are capable of a lot more than some people think. I think it was very original and colorful so I was very proud and happy to have her on the podium to share the win with me.”

<h2 style="font-weight:bold;">Valentino Rossi #46:</h2>

4th / +5.874 / 25 laps

“We wanted to try and arrive on the podium, but anyway it was quite a good race. Race by race, apart form the unlucky times, especially like Mugello, we grow up and I am able to ride the bike in a better way. We still have some challenges, especially in the first part of the race where I still don't have the right setting to push to the maximum. After some laps my pace was not so bad and we were not so far from the top guys. We did a good job and we will now go for two days of testing where we will try to improve further. We don't give up, we will make another step and we will not be so far from the front.”

<strong>Wilco Zeelenberg - Team Manager:</strong>

“A fantastic day here in Barcelona, I think maybe one of his best races ever, maybe not the fastest as the circumstances were not good and the lap times were slow, but to ride on the limit every lap and push as he did to keep a little gap to Dani and Marc is very impressive. I’m very happy for the team and also Vale finished with good points which is good. The championship is close, there was a lot to lose and a little bit to win today, the five points extra we got are important. It’s always important to beat your competitors but it’s not always possible. Mugello and Catalunya are very smooth tracks and fit our bike quite well and Jorge loves them. For sure we will get some tracks where we struggle a bit more. We must think ahead, this one is done and there are still 12 races to go.”

<strong>Massimo Meregalli - Team Director:</strong>

“Another super performance from Jorge. He has been really impressive. I think the whole team did a really good job as they were able to close the gap, improving the bike overnight as yesterday we really suffered in hot conditions compared to our competitors. He couldn't have done better so compliments to him and his crew. For me Vale has done his best race after Qatar. His feeling is getting better and he is getting closer. I think the circumstances were very difficult today, really hot conditions and a big lack of grip. For me we closed the weekend in a really good way. After the race we have revised the test plan, due to the weather forecast. After internal discussion we have decided to stay here at Catalunya tomorrow and to test at Aragon on Wednesday only. We will test a few things for the frame to try and improve it; let's see what we can prepare for Assen.”

American Motorcyclist Association Press Release:

The National Defense Authorization Act, which includes language to create the Johnson Valley National Off-Highway Vehicle Recreation Area in California to protect it from a military takeover, has cleared the U.S. House, the American Motorcyclist Association reports.

<strong><em>On June 14, the House approved the authorization bill, H.R. 1960. The measure now goes to the Senate for further consideration.</em></strong>

The legislation includes language written by Rep. Paul Cook (R-Calif.) to protect Johnson Valley from a takeover by the U.S. Navy that would virtually end riding there. The Navy wants to expand the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center at Twentynine Palms into the 189,000-acre Johnson Valley area, which is a long-standing and popular area that is across the San Bernardino Mountains from Los Angeles.

"This legislation has cleared an important hurdle," Cook said when the proposal cleared a House committee earlier. "Support for it was overwhelmingly bipartisan. My concern has always been about public safety. The Johnson Valley is one of the few places left for off-highway vehicle recreation. This is a balanced approach which protects public safety while still allowing for recreational use."

Cook is a member of the House Armed Services and Veterans' Affairs Committees. He served as an infantry officer and retired after 26 years as a colonel in the U.S. Marine Corps. During his time in combat, he was awarded the Bronze Star and two Purple Hearts.

Several years ago, the U.S. Department of the Navy began the formal process to take over some 365,906 acres of public land near San Bernardino to use for live-fire training for the Marines.

<em><strong>Cook's proposal would designate Johnson Valley OHV as the Johnson Valley National OHV Recreation Area. The area would be designated specifically for recreational uses, including, but not limited to, OHV use, camping and hiking. Marine Corps activities would be allowed twice a year and couldn't include any explosives that could be left behind.</strong></em>

Ducati Press Release:

In sunny and hot conditions at the Circuit de Catalunya, <a title="Ducati Motorcycles" href="http://www.cycleworld.com/ducati/"><strong>Ducati</strong></a> Team riders Nicky Hayden and Andrea Dovizioso rode to the fifth and ninth spots on the grid, respectively, for tomorrow’s Catalan Grand Prix.

<div style="border-top:1px solid #ccc; height:20px;">&nbsp;</div>

It was a positive day for Hayden, who was the second-quickest rider in the morning session, then backed it up with his best qualifying session of the year thus far. The American had also set the circuit top-speed record in free practice aboard his Desmosedici GP13, although the mark was subsequently eclipsed by Marc Marquez in the afternoon. Meanwhile, Dovizioso improved his pace from yesterday, but had back luck in qualifying and didn’t manage to put together a good lap. He’ll share tomorrow’s all-Italian third row with Valentino Rossi and Andrea Iannone.

<img src="http://www.cycleworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/resized_00038554.jpg" alt="Nicky Hayden race action at Catalunya" width="590" height="393" />

<h2 style="font-weight:bold;">Nicky Hayden - Ducati Team, 5th (1:41.800)</h2>

“Dani [Pedrosa] had a spectacular pole lap, but the front row wasn’t out of the question for me today. That would’ve been nice, but this is still my best qualifying position of the year so far. The bike is working pretty well when we have new tires, but as soon as we lose a little bit of edge grip, it starts pumping. It was okay for qualifying, but we’ll have to try something tomorrow morning to see if we can make the tire last longer. We know it won’t be an easy race, but hopefully we can put up a good fight and have some fun.”

<img src="http://www.cycleworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/resized_00038544.jpg" alt="Andrea Dovizioso race action" width="635" height="423" />

<h2 style="font-weight:bold;">Andrea Dovizioso - Ducati Team, 9th (1:42.053)</h2>

“It’s a shame about the qualifying session. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do a perfect lap, and starting from the third row won’t be easy. That’s too bad because Barcelona is one of the nicest tracks to ride when you have a perfect lap, but I’m mainly disappointed that our spot on the grid will make it difficult for us tomorrow. My first exit was good, and I knew that if I could put all the sectors together, I could lower my time by three or four tenths. Then on my first lap with the second tire, the bike closed the front in turn four. I almost fell and had to abort the lap in order to save the tire. We’ve improved a lot from yesterday—more with pace than on a fast lap—but it will certainly be a very difficult race as we’ll all be struggling when the tires wear. It will be important to make up some positions at the start, as anything can happen in the race.”

Repsol Media Press Release:

Repsol Honda Team rider takes second consecutive pole position, again beating the lap record. Marc Marquez sixth in qualifying and will start from second row.

Dani Pedrosa again showed his quality in qualifying for the Catalan Grand Prix, setting the fastest lap ever recorded by a rider at the track. He broke a record held by <a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/tag/casey-stoner/" title="Casey Stoner"><strong>Casey Stoner</strong></a> since 2008, en route to pole position for his home round. The new marker time for the track is now 1’40.893, which gave Pedrosa his second consecutive start from the front of the grid.

Repsol <a title="Honda Motorcycles" href="http://www.cycleworld.com/honda/"><strong>Honda</strong></a> teammate Marc Marquez will take off from the second row, in sixth place. He also set a new record on Saturday, with the fastest ever top speed of 342.4km/h at the Circuit de Catalunya. That bested a feat held by Alex Barros since 2004.

Pedrosa’s speedy form was evident this morning in the third free practice session, in which he was third in a run dominated by Marquez. The latter had set a great time that his rivals were unable to match. However, in the fourth session and in qualifying, nobody could hang with Pedrosa; his times were the best in each of the sessions. The increase in temperature meant that Marquez experienced more problems than expected in his quest to get the best from his bike, and in the end he would qualify sixth –on row 2.

<em><strong>The MotoGP Catalan Grand Prix takes place tomorrow at 2pm local time.</strong></em>

FP3: 1:41.987, 19 laps, 90 km
Q2: 1:40.893, 8 laps, 38 km

“I am very happy, because we put in a great lap and took a great qualifying time. It was a fantastic pole position for me. We also broke the circuit record and were able to do so in front of the home fans. I am also happy about improving our race pace, as this is the most important thing. We hope to put on a good show tomorrow and take full advantage of the front row start.”

FP3: 1:41.853, 19 laps, 90 km
Q2: 1:41.842, 8 laps, 38 km

“I am fairly happy and satisfied, because we achieved our objective of getting onto either the first or second row. In the morning I felt more comfortable, with the track temperatures lower than in the afternoon. When they rose sharply, we had more problems. Despite this, I think that we have done a good job. We will try to test out a few things in the warmup tomorrow and see if we can gain a little more confidence when the track is hotter.”

Yamaha Factory Racing Press Release:

Jorge Lorenzo continued his unbroken run as the only rider to consistently start from the front row this season, taking third on the grid for tomorrow’s Gran Premi Aperol de Catalunya. The reigning world champion had only the last minutes of the brief qualifying heat to record a best time after a clutch issue forced him to pit shortly after the session started. Despite the setback he was able to salvage a front row start in third with a 1’41.566 after completing just seven laps. Lorenzo was able to walk away uninjured from a crash in the morning’s third free practice after losing the front at turn five. Conditions were even hotter than yesterday with track temperatures hitting up to 57 degrees over the afternoon.

Having been the fastest rider yesterday Valentino Rossi continued his competitive pace into the third free practice this morning, ending in fourth but just 0.156 seconds from first. Having mastered race pace the nine-time champion turned to qualifying, allowing most of the field to leave the pits before venturing out to find some clean track. Using the harder front and soft rear tire option he delivered a best time of 1’41.959 to take seventh on the third row of the grid, less than four tenths from his team mate Lorenzo on the front row.

<h2 style="font-weight:bold;">Jorge Lorenzo #99:</h2>

3rd / 1'41.566 / 7 laps

“I’m very disappointed because today we had a problem with the clutch in a crucial moment and this lap time was the best I could do. I also had not so much confidence on the front to make a perfect lap. We hope for race distance we can remain constant and fight for the win. We will need to be strong and concentrate for the whole race; we don't know what can happen in the 20th lap.”

<img src="http://www.cycleworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/yfr_editorial_use_pictures-13.jpg" alt="Valentino Rossi race action" width="590" height="393" />

<h2 style="font-weight:bold;">Valentino Rossi # 46:</h2>

7th / 1'41.959 / 8 laps

“We worked hard today; it’s not so bad but unfortunately we are not able to start from a better position on the grid. We tried everything but I still don't have the maximum feeling to improve a bit more. The race tomorrow is going to be very interesting because of the tyre choice and the rhythm. There are four or five riders who are very fast and very constant so we hope to do a good start and good first laps to stay with the top guys and check our performance.”

<strong>Wilco Zeelenberg - Team Manager:</strong>

“A strange day but overall we are in front row even when we had a problem with the first bike. The clutch was spinning when he went out which isn’t ideal because you miss a bit of time with your first tire. He did well anyway with a 1’41.7s lap. We had to stay out with the same bike, but he was able to make a 1’41.5s lap to qualify for the front row. I think that was the maximum for today, Dani with his 40.8 was unreachable. We have to sort out what went wrong with the clutch and dig into our set ups to prepare for tomorrow’s race.”

<strong>Massimo Meregalli - Team Director:</strong>

“We are quite satisfied with the pace we could run in the free practices but the qualifying didn't go as we expected. We have to try and close the gap as our competitors are quicker, especially in the hot conditions that we will probably have again tomorrow. We will work to understand how to improve the total package and we will do our best to be as competitive as possible for tomorrow. The race is always different to the qualifying session. We know the tires we are going to use, we have to try and make the rear last as long as possible. The race is going to be tough and difficult but we will be ready.”

Bridgestone Motorsport Press Release:

For the second consecutive race Dani Pedrosa set a new pole position record in qualifying, the Repsol <a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/honda/" title="Honda Motorcycles"><strong>Honda</strong></a> rider setting a remarkable lap time of 1’40.893 to claim the first slot on the grid for tomorrow’s Catalan Grand Prix.

Pedrosa’s storming lap saw him qualify more than six-tenths of a second ahead of his nearest rival, the Monster Yamaha Tech 3 M1 of Cal Crutchlow whose best time of 1’41.608 placed him in second position. Rounding out the front row of the grid in third place and 0.065 seconds adrift of Crutchlow was <a href="http://www.cycleworld.com/yamaha/" title="Yamaha Motorcycles"><strong>Yamaha</strong></a> Factory Racing’s Jorge Lorenzo. Power Electronics Aspar’s Aleix Espargaro was the best CRT qualifier, his time of 1'42.878 placing him twelfth overall.

Yesterday’s hot weather intensified today with track temperatures soaring to 58°C in QP1. Many riders took to task in the free practice sessions to evaluate both options of rear slick, and amongst the works riders the consensus is that despite the extremely high track temperatures, the superior edge grip of the softer rear slick has the better overall performance at this circuit which features prolonged periods at high lean angles. With many fast and flowing corners, the harder front slick is preferred due to its more stable feel.

<img src="http://www.cycleworld.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/06/Cal-Crutchlow-Monster-Yamaha-Tech-3-2013-Catalan-MotoGP-QP.jpg" alt="Cal Crutchlow race action at Catalunya" width="590" height="393" />

<em><strong>Tomorrow’s Warm Up session at 0940 local time (GMT +2) will give riders a last opportunity to decide on tire choice for the twenty-five lap race which commences at 1400.</strong></em>

<strong>Shinji Aoki - Manager, Bridgestone Motorsport Tyre Development Department:</strong>

“We had another very hot day today and many riders took the opportunity to test both rear tyre options in today’s free practice sessions. The feedback we received is that the harder rear slick gave better drive out of corners, but with the riders spending so much time at high lean angles, the greater edge grip of the softer rear slick is the better performing option around this circuit. Also, the track condition improved today so the consistency of lap times of the softer rear on long runs was better, so I think many works riders are planning on using this option for tomorrow’s race - even in these very hot conditions. Front tire choice for the race is clearer with the harder option being preferred by almost everyone.”

Friday saw a positive day of work for the Repsol <a title="Honda Motorcycles" href="http://www.cycleworld.com/honda/"><strong>Honda</strong></a> Team riders at the Circuit de Catalunya, where round six of the MotoGP World Championship takes place this weekend. After the two initial free practice sessions, Dani Pedrosa and Marc Marquez sit third and sixth, respectively, on the combined time-sheets. The best times of the day went to Valentino Rossi and Jorge Lorenzo.

High temperatures which reached 28ºC –and 49ºC on track– greeted the premier class riders on their opening day at the Catalan track. Dani Pedrosa clocked the fastest time in the morning with a 1’42.044, but was unable to better that lap in an afternoon session focused on tire choice. Repsol Honda teammate Marc Marquez made steady progress, improving his times in the afternoon and ending the session with a top time of 1’42.857 –giving him sixth place.

<em><strong>The final free practice sessions and qualifying will take place tomorrow, deciding the grid for Sunday’s race.</strong></em>

“Above all today, we focused on testing tires. We were able to ride some laps with the soft tires and also the hards, in order to see which are best suited to the track. Getting the choice right is very important at this circuit, because it is always hot in the race and it is usually a key to managing this. The tires suffer a little when we lean the bike over, but we are working on this issue. We still haven't decided which compounds we will use, so we will see what tomorrow brings and then go from there.”

FP1: 1:43.641, 19 laps, 90 km
FP2: 1'42.857, 18 laps, 85 km

“I am pretty happy with how the day went. We followed the normal Friday agenda; in the first session we were ninth, over one second from the top, then in the second session we cut the gap to half a second and finished sixth in the combined times. I am very happy with the work that we have done, but we still have things to improve and there are points on the track where I am still not comfortable. I have to improve my adaptation to the circuit and some details with the setup but the most important thing is that we have cut the gap and are working in the right direction.”

Having named the track as one of his top three favorites, the nine-time champion was clearly enjoying being back at the Circuit de Catalunya on his YZR-M1. Rossi wrapped up the morning first practice in fifth position, just under half a second from the front. He upped the pace in the afternoon, diving under the circuit record in the last three minutes with a 1’42.297 lap on a fresh soft tire to go top.

Reigning world champion Jorge Lorenzo was on typical form in front of his home crowd today and was quick to find his trademark blistering pace. Lorenzo wrapped up the morning session in first, 0.023 seconds ahead of fellow Spanish rider Dani Pedrosa. The afternoon saw a repeat performance as he led for the majority of the session, only passed by his teammate in the final minutes to leave him in second place, 0.049 seconds from Rossi in first.

“I love this track; it is one of the best. The M1 is always great here in Catalunya. It is just Friday but I am very happy to be in front, although we have still a lot of work to do. We have to decide which tire to use and we have some corners and sections where we have to improve for tomorrow. Anyway, it is great to be back on top.”

“We started very well but we tried two settings that didn’t work so well. We stayed with the same tires for the whole practice to understand why they are dropping in this weather so we could solve this problem that I think all the riders are having. We have to try and improve the bike in order to let me have more confidence, then I can stay in the middle of the 42 second mark which is my target. We don’t focus so much on the classification because not all the riders kept on the same tires during the practice, a new tire can give you half a second or more. We have to trust the pace and the pace is good, one of the best of the grid."

<strong>Wilco Zeelenberg - Team Manager:</strong>

“A very good first day in very hot conditions. It was important to see how the bike behaved this afternoon. Jorge was not really pleased with the performance but I was actually pleased as we have a clear direction for tomorrow, this is what counts. It’s the first day, we are still second and Vale was fast with the soft tire at the end. We found our direction to work in for tomorrow which is good.”

<strong>Massimo Meregalli - Team Director:</strong>

“A really good starting point; having both bikes in the top two is a good result. We still have a lot of work to do. We have to perfect the set up and decide which tire to use in the race. So far we’ve done a good job so let’s see what we can do to make it even better tomorrow.”
