World Ducati Week 2014: The Superleggera And The Scrambler

You don’t have to choose between these divergent Ducatis.

Ducati had polar opposite models featured at World Ducati Week 2014. At one end of the Misano paddock, a pavilion that looked more like a museum was devoted to the ultra sophisticated, ultra fast, ultra expensive Superleggera. Nary a Ducati fan wandered by without ogling this marvel of motorcycle technology wrapped in super sleek styling It's just that spectacular.

At the opposite end of the paddock, in a grassy area filled with surf shacks, ping pong tables, a keg and a couple of Italian guys throwing down American do-wop with a touch of grunge, stood a huge yellow container where the new Scrambler Ducati was introduced. One dozen Ducatisti (devoid of smartphones and cameras) were allowed in at a time. All emerged with a grin.

So, which bike’s more exciting? Hard to say. Ducati's Last Big Thing and Next Big Deal couldn't be more different, but they share the same commitment to precision and beauty the Italian brand is known for. They also both appeal to under-tapped markets.

The Superleggera isn't the first uber superbike, but it's made for riders who have the means and the ability to ride the heck out of the lightest, most technically advanced 200-hp motorcycle ever. And they do. One went whizzing by me in the paddock this morning, piloted by a gray-haired rider with well-scuffed pucks. Nor is the Scrambler the first retro revival. But with an old soul and modern meccanica, you really can't call it a vintage bike (that headlight, by the way looks like it's right out Iron Man).

Viewed another way, these bikes are a vodka martini (shaken, not stirred) and a frosty pint. Tiramisu and spumone. Ginger and Mary Ann. Even the Professor couldn't chose. You're not supposed to try.
