The office here at Cycle World is really pretty much the same as any other office building: cubes, copiers and Berber carpeting. Except for the garage full of testbikes, you could be in any other office in the world. And just like anyone working in an office building, to get to the water cooler, you navigate a maze of cubes and hallways lined with file cabinets and shelves full of binders. But it’s the hidden contents of those binders that makes the halls of Cycle World special. Because since the founding of the magazine in 1962, these binders have had catalogued in them every photo shoot and every motorcycle event a staff photographer has ever attended. Each one is filled with no less than motorcycle history itself.
Grabbing any one of these huge, black three-ring binders and letting it just fall open to any random page of film reveals pure vintage gold. Well, we couldn’t stand the idea that these amazing photos were just sitting here and we’re now determined to share some of them. So each week, we’re going to start scanning some glimpses into the glory days of handlebars and handlebar mustaches.
So, whether this is a nostalgic trip down memory lane for you or you just happen to be the type who can appreciate some vintage “radness,” we hope you enjoy these selections from motorcycling’s history. Our only regret is that there isn’t more specific information on each photo, but that’s not going to stop us from sharing as many as we can, and what we do know, we’ll share. Enjoy.
