Cannonball is go!

The 2010 Cannonball is underway. Forty-four pre-1916 motorcycles posed for a vintage-style panoramic photograph at the foot of Kill Devil Hill in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, this morning before firing up and roaring westward toward the California coast. Only 16 days and 3272 miles to go before the winner is declared on Santa Monica Pier!

A few bikes took to the shoulder of the road with (hopefully temporary) mechanical issues even before the 5-mile mark. Many of the near-100-year-old machines are capable of cruising at 50 mph, but are those main bearings and cylinder walls getting enough lubrication?

Shinya Kimura cruises past the Wright Brothers monument in Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, on his way to California on his 1915 Indian Twin.

It’ll be interesting to see how many of these fantastic old machines survive this test. One thing’s for sure, everyone here is having a blast.

Stay tuned…

The Cannonball Run is by far, the most exciting thing to happen in motorcycling for a long time. I am anxiously watching the E-Zines for information as the vintage beauties make their way across our nation…I’m getting goosebumps….

God bless those dedicated guys (and gals!) who spend so much of their time and assets to resurrect, preserve, and ride these glorious old dinasaurs so that we could witness an event such as this with such pride!
Everyone present yestrerday was thrilled to death just to be able to get up close and view first hand the origins of what’s become our great sport. It truly was an exciting scene to be a part of and I am grateful.
