Let’s face it: most three-quarter helmets evoke images of tradition, not technology. Davida, however, claims to have integrated these usually mutually exclusive ideals into its hand-made designs.
We sampled the smartly styled Jet, one of four available models. Using three shells to cover six sizes (XS-XXL), all feature composite-fiberglass construction, dual-density foam interiors and hand-sewn quilted-leather liners with silk crowns. Most importantly, they meet Europe’s strict ECE R22-05 safety standard.
One of the advantages of an open-face helmet compared with a conventional full-face design is the enhanced ability to carry on a conversation with a passenger or even other motorists. In-town errands, such as popping into a sandwich shop for take-out, can be done without undoing the double D-ring chin strap.
Downside, of course, is the near-com-plete absence of facial protection. Forget crashing; even when wearing goggles (not included), we never got used to our faces “flapping” at high speeds. That being said, the foam-backed leather lining provides a decent sound barrier on long, fast runs, particularly if you wear earplugs. Options include clear and tinted, ECE-approved snap-on faceshields, two styles of peaks, and both tailored and universal leather facemasks.
After 30 years in business, U.K.-based Davida has earned a deserved reputation for comfort, quality and style. Count us among its fans.
